The Renix era (yours) MJs had a closed cooling system, so they had to be manually burped of air. To do so is tough, I got so fed up with trying to burp mine I just switched to open cooling. Ideally you'd want a vacuum kit that sucks all the air out of the system, and forces coolant in it's place. Without that, it's alot of trial and error, opening and closing the coolant bottle over and over until the air eventually leaves the system, and even then if your on a hill or something, not all that air will escape.

Burping on the renix seems easy for me, 2 ways to go.

1. burp thru temp sensor on rear left of engine.

2. raise front of truck up and burp it that way.

I have never had problems burping it in either of these ways.

Now if your still getting overheating 2 things to check.

1. make sure your water pump is pumping and the impellers are not broken.

2. make sure your thermostat is opening all the way and is not stuck.

Things else that could be causing overheating, Bad fan clutch, timing is off, or a head gasket leak....

What are all your old tricks?

Slowly overheats under what conditions?  Highway speed, traffic, crawling, idling, up a hill, towing?

...and the French aren't responsible for your whole truck...although they are rude.
