mik666
hey gang - ok so thought i'd replace my radiator hoses (87 2 wd 4.0 auto) since they are probably 8-10 years old. easy enough, done in 10 m and since i didn't see any radiator cap i just sort of poured some coolant in the over flow tank thinking it was some type of open system and drive down to wash the thing at local do it yourself place ( few blocks away) . on the way back it wouldn't catch anything above first gear (and would drop out of that at most RPMs) and when i pulled in the driveway the coolant in the overflow was boiling off like crazy - did i f'up and just miss the cap - it isn't readily apparent (i admit i am a jeep/auto novice) - the idiot light never came on but i figure the overheating may of caused the shifting problems (over flow on a connector or something?). i believe it may be an aftermarket radiator as i see no cap - and i know the previous owner mentioned he pout an aluminum radiator in... any help appreciated of course
87MJTIM
You're supposed to fill from the reservoir bottle. The renix engine has a closed system. The bottle is on the passenger side back on the firewall.
mik666
thx Tim yeah did that - i ended up popping the top radiator hose off at the radiator and pouring coolant in the hose until it came out of the radiator, then put it back on and then added some to the overflow/ reservoir tank - once i looked at it i see why shifting was bad - coolant lines to tranny runs to radiator - after topping up drove around and it runs just like before - bit of panic and dumb-$#!&ness on my part - thx! 64 Cheyenne
Search "Burp cooling system" Jeep 4.0. You should still do this to remove any air left in system.
mik666
fck when i "burped it" the sensor slipped out of the socket and is not to be found -one of those days (!) - good thing its only $12 at NApa
64 Cheyenne
A good mod is to install an HO Tstat housing with a petcock in place of the temp sender, makes burpin easy.

That's not "burping" the system, that's for the initial fill. Every time you drive the truck for the next week, after it cools down check the coolant level in the plastic bottle. As air gets burped out of the system, the level will probably go down. The correct fill level is HALFWAY when cold. Don't fill it all the way or you'll blow up the plastic tank. cruiser54
Put a 703-1396 Napa cap on the "bottle".
