Any body familiar with it? Got a chance to pick one up complete with transmission and transfer case. Got a MJ with an empty engine bay. I just don't know anything about the Dodge 3.9 and wondering if it's any good or not. Comments? :dunno:

Decent enough engine. Like many V6's it is basically a small block dodge with two cylinders removed. I am pretty sure the small block engine mounts work as well

First year for the 3.9 was 1986 and it had a carb and was only available in the Dakota. If you have that engine I stay away from it. Carbs sucked (lean burn crap). 88 was first year with throttle body fi. 91 was first year for multi port.

Finally got a hold of somebody knows a little more about the engine. It's a '95. Not a '85. Going over tomorrow and take a look at it. He claims it ran good. Only reason they parted it was title problem. Got a 5spd tranny and transfer case. Hoping they still have the drive shafts.  We'll see.

Just talked to the guy knows a little more about the engine. It is a 1995 3.9. Ran good. Only reason they parted it was title problems. Going over tomorrow and take a look at it. Was going to drop it into a 1987 MJ. May drop it into a '91 I have instead. We'll see. Anybody here knows anybody done this already? Anybody know of any write ups on any of the Jeep sites that may have already done this? Which will be easier. To detune the '95 engine to '87 specs? Or bring the '87 up to '95 specs? :dunno:  Sure miss the good ol days when a engine swap just meant swapping engines. Not rewiring, rebuilding everything to meet modern requirements.

It looks like they use the regular small block motor mounts. I don't know if commando/magnum series make a difference.  I am not sure what you mean by de-tuning? I have never had to do that for an engine swap. The lack of hippies here means we do not test emissions or inspect or the like so is that the problem?

I would pull a OBD-I XJ dash and engine harness and graft it to the engine. You would have to extend a couple injector wires to reach and swap out a few sensor plugs. The ECU from the 3.9 "should" plug right into the XJ wiring. Motor mounts will have to be a custom job. I don't think the ZJ V8 mounts will work with the shorter V6.
