87MJTIM
When the engine was rebuilt the mechanic put the oil filter adapter pointed to rear of the engine. It used to point up. Now, when I change the oil, I have to crawl under the truck and reach up to get the OF off. I cannot pull it out the top with the sender unit and wires in the way. I have tried everything. I see a bolt on the face of the OF adapter. Can I loosen the bolt and rotate the OF adapter back to its original position? Will turn easily? Is it threaded? Is there a gasket or sealer on it? ScottJeep
Mine is.... But if you remove .....I would never take it off, for rotation or really any reason, without replacing the o-rings. They are so cheap and one of those things that if you don't you'll surely nick it re-installing and then a leak appears. Mine....sticking up... A simple search should get you plenty of "internet based assistance".
sloride
I used a 90degree brass street elbow when I installed my new sending unit.
87MJTIM
Sloride, that may solve the issue of crawling under the truck. However, in its current location, it drips oil on the starter when I remove the OF. Another reason to change its position.

fiatslug87
You can loosen and rotate it. I just did this yesterday to get it out of the way to remove the engine mount bolt. Didn't have the O-rings so I just loosened it enough to rotate it out of the way, got my new mount in and rotated it back into place and tightened it. I has not leaked yet but I'll be getting a set of the O-rings just in case.
87MJTIM
Thanks Fiat. I was not sure what was holding it in place. I now know its just a bolt and O ring. On my next oil change I will rotate it.
teamsmith
I have a similar question: After a long weekend of wrestling bolts, I am nearly ready to install a replacement motor that has been sitting on a stand for 3 weeks. It's a '98 and has the the filter pointed backwards. I think I would prefer it pointed up like you all have discussed. Can anyone confirm I can just loosen the bolt and rotate? Other threads have referenced a locating pin that needs to be filed off. Is that the case for me? Thank you
