My $300 comanche offroad project

Recommended Posts

Today I picked up my first Jeep. Its an 89 pioneer comanche. 4x4. 4.0 with a 5 speed. Homemade lift kit and 33" tires. Body is super solid. Couple dents and so on. Definetly needs some work. Its missing the rear driveshaft. No seat. Previous owner was in the middle of replacong clutch and now I've got that to finish.

I have a few questions. #1 being. Are there any other models of jeeps that I can steal the rear driveshaft from?

#2 does anybody have a picture of the 4wd shift linkage. Looks like I'm missing a few parts. Any help would be awesome.

Welcome! :waving:

Unfortunately I don't think any other rear DS is compatible unless you just measure the length and go trolling the JY with a tape measure.

You will probably have to get one made or get one from another MJ and if it is a 2wd model have it shortened to the correct length.

Thread about drive shaft lengths: http://comancheclub.com/topic/18925-looking-for-driveshaft-lengths-of-stock-trucks/

I think most people here would recommend replacing the shift linkage with an aftermarket kit or I believe there is a good write up on a custom set up on here somewhere, someone else will chime in with more details I'm sure.  EDIT: found the link http://www.boostwerksengineering.com/231-HD-Shift-Linkage-Auto-Trans-_p_25.html

That one is for the 231, you'll have to check yours to make sure its right.

Also!

Just a little updated photos. I left the shackle on the back. Which I think is 2.5 inches and did the SOA swap. The spring perches I got are slightly taller than stock, I'd say a half inch. So with that said In going to say the back end has about 8.5 inches of lift now.

Haha thanks. I'm good though. Did that once before at a buddies lifting his dodge. Let some air out of the tires and wiggled it through!

So does anyone have some shock part numbers that might fit my truck? I'm looking at 13 compressed and 20 extended to be safe.

So today after jacking the one rear tire up on my manche, I'm thinkin I should have left the big bottom leaf out of my spring pack.

It really dosn't have the flex that I was expectin it to have. Whats everyones thoughts on losing my bottom leaf? I'm gonna lose like 3/4 of an inch but thats worth it to me if I can add some travel/flex!

YES!!! Those are spacers under the springs. This is a budget build so I'm cheating a little. Those are 3 inch springs with 3 inch spacers welded up top and 4 below.

Eventually I will end up swapping in heavier axles and I can do a better setup then. This is just a quickey so I can hit the trails long enough to tear these axles up.

And lastly a picture of the tires on it and actual ride height. Those are 17 wide 40 tall gumbo monster mudders. Picked them up cheap with decent tread.

The truck leans towards the drivers side some. The drivers coil spring is weaker then the passenger side. About 1.5" to be exact. Thinking about cuttig the stronger one down a little to even it out. Whys everyones thought on that?

Also, has anyone made there own tracbar setup? I'm thinking about building my own frame mount bracket and welding a mount on top of the axle tube and making a tracbar from heim joints off of three point arms. It will be a straight tracbar, does that matter?
