I guess this is how you do an intro to the forum. Here is my new to me truck. It is a 1988 4.0 auto rust bucket. The guy I bought it from said it was nothing but problems for him. His 8 year drove it into a guard rail, his wife left the ignition on and killed the battery, lots of little things.

For me, she gets new doors. Then the bed comes off for a little rust removal on the rear frame. Then some new brakes. After that I might play with the steering some. Then it will be left alone for a while.

Also, I am just noticing a lack of upload picture option. So I will pull the computer out tomorrow and link away to pictures.

Lets add pictures

This is my favorite part.  The lady said the door is damaged.  However it does close and lock.  And it does not leak.

Check out the wicked sweet interior.  It has the factory radio in it.  We all know that means it is work bank.

Around here that is not a rust bucket, it's almost a cream puff except for the door damage.

The bed has a few rusted through spots above the wheel wells.  The frame rails seem to be clean.  The rust is on the X cross support under the bed.  It is pretty bad.  I am going to take the bed off and wire brush it to heck and back.  There is a thread on here somewhere of a guy who cut a foot or so out of the back of his bed and put the tailgate back on.  If I ever find it, I am going to mirror that.    I also want to make the bed removable.  I do not want to roll the thing and damage the bed.

  • 2 months later...

Well, here is the 4 month update.  I fixed the battery.  She cranks right up now.  So that is a win.  The driver side door is still a little less than water proof.  And with the 2 feet of snow we have had this month that is a slight issue.  Here are some other issues.  And they were discovered on a 7 mile drive to Old Country Buffet and 7 mile drive home.

1) Not overly water tight.

2) The dash lights do not light up the speedo or gas-0

3) The transmission is not firmly secured to anything.  It jumps like a trampoline.

4) The exhaust.  See above.  Also, it is very much swiss cheese.  The fix for that will be a sawzall

5) The steering wheel can make a half turn before the tires move.  From a quick look the steering gear box is gone.  I need to further investigate

6) The brakes are nonexistent when the engine is cold.  Once the engine warmed up the brakes would lock up the tires. Weird

7) The gas tank has a tiny leak.  Of the 22 gallons I put into the tank upon leaving my house I used maybe 1 to drive to and from dinner.  I used maybe 5 to melt the snow in the parking lot under my jeep.  And another 2-3 to melt snow in my driveway trying to get it parked.

Also, this truck as no @$$ to get up my driveway.  The tires are all bald so they just spin.  It requires 4wd to park.  It is going to be a few more weeks before I have time to do any work on the truck.  But the good news is that I have a bunch of side work coming up.  And that means I can buy new tools.  Lots of air tools, impact guns, impact wrenches, air cutoff wheels, lots of stuff.  So I have that going for me.
