black Posted December 1, 2014 Share Posted December 1, 2014 Hey everyone, I just picked up a pretty clean 86 longbox 4x4 with the 2.5L The 2.5 has a slight lifter tick that has me a little worried. Can Anyone tell me if a 2.5L from a 2000 TJ will have the same sensors and be a pretty straight forward swap? I know the block will bolt in easy, just hoping someone here can give me a definite answer so I don't do the swap and have the sensors not work properly. Dillithium Posted December 1, 2014 Share Posted December 1, 2014 Your 86 is a TBI while the TJ is MPI. Very different when it comes to sensors/electronics. Your best bet would be to use the TJ block and swap over the renix intake/wiring. Question though, why not just replace the lifters? With a 2.5 you have easy acces to them, if memory serves you don't even have to take off the head. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
mnkyboy Posted December 1, 2014 Share Posted December 1, 2014 You would need to strip the newer engine to a long block then put everything off your engine onto the new one. Usually the head needs to come off to change the lifters,it looks like they would come out but the holes in the casting are a little too small for the lifters to pass through. Ive though of replacing the lifters but that still leaves me with an old worn out TBI when I have a nice low mileage TJ engine that didn't cost me a thing. The TJ engine is basically stripped already so I have no problem just swapping out the block as long as it will work which it sounds like it will. You'll have to decide which era accessories you'll want to use, the '86 and '00 will not mingle. Alt, pulleys, PS.......etc.....timing covers are different and so forth. So just to make sure I understand everyone correctly... the 2000 engine will go in and run? Ive done an engine swap before where everything bolted on but the sensors were moved.. and it wouldn't start. I'd rather not have to do that again You are going to have to remove EVERYTHING from your 86 and move it over to your 2000........this may include your timing cover and oil pan and oil pickup.....intake.......sensors..........etc.......even the engine mount brackets are different. All you are swapping is the block and head........if you are going to keep your Renix system......this is ignition, TBI, wiring...etc. You will also need to retain your fly wheel from the 86....it will all move over to the 2000.
