USAFAGumby
I have read plenty of articles about what is needed, I just want to make sure I got it all right so i'm not stuck at the shop in the middle of this thing ahah. I have a torn down AX-15 that appears to have the right clocking for the XJ. It is internal slave and I plan on keeping it that way right now I plan on keeping the NP231 and replacing the input shaft with a 21 spline from advanced adaptors that I already purchased. I know there is a back up switch difference which I plan on fixing, but it is not critical. I think I need a pilot bushing out of a CJ? An AX-15 transmission mount since apparently the old cross member will work fine. And linkage for the TC, however, I have no idea where to gather the TC parts. Anything I'm missing or any advice before I dive into this project? Thanks for all the help as well everyone!
87MJTIM
What year was the XJ? The tip of the input shaft changed (94?). If a later model AX15, you will need a new pilot bushing with a ~.75" ID for the larger input shaft tip. There is a recent thread where another CC member was having trouble with a PB. Follow that thread and find out how he solved his issues. The tcase input shaft changed from 21 splines (BA10) to 23 splines (AX15). Your signature indicates a BA10, so you will need to change the input shaft to a 23 spline shaft. For the reverse light, just get a wire adapter from auto parts store and splice it to the existing wireharness on the truck. I just did this on an AX15 in to a CJ7. The NP231 will bolt right up to either the BA10 and AX15. You do not need a clocking plate. The cross member for the BA10 does not line up with the AX15. If I recall other's descriptions, the trans drop is diff (either higher or lower). If you are keeping your existing tcase, then your current shift linkage will work. USAFAGumby
Right my fault, I have the 23 spline input shaft to fit. Good news about the shift linkage cause I had seen a $171 from novak for a new kit. Not sure what year the AX-15 is from so I'll deal with the PB when it comes. Here is what I found about the transmission mount, http://www.omix-ada.com/transmission-mount-ax5-ax15-transmissions.html I believe it fits both cross members and it is that mount that is different. Thanks for the help!!!
desertmike
Done this several times. The cross members are different. The BA/10-TC shift linkage will not work on the AX15.
USAFAGumby
Would this linkage work? http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/shifters/sk2xc.htm Also, what about the cross members? Am I going to need to pull one from a junk yard?
xjrev10
Would this linkage work? http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/shifters/sk2xc.htm Also, what about the cross members? Am I going to need to pull one from a junk yard? There is zero reason why that would not work. I plan to use that exact part in my nv3550 swapped 88. I have TJ clocking. Nothing a hammer cannot fix. xjrev10
This is always a option http://www.rustysoffroad.com/jeep-skid-plates/jeep-xj-cherokee-skid-plates/rustys-crossmembers-trail-tested-crossmember-1-drop.html The one I used. I have had a Ax15 and a nv3550 in my jeep in the last month. It works fine. With this mount. http://www.quadratec.com/products/76058_831.htm

Brickmiata
I just completed the swap from ba10 to ax15. I used the orginal ba10 crossmember with ax15 mount and no new hole drilled at all. Also, the ba10 linkage will work. You need to remove the metal plate that holds a pivot bushing from the ax15 and the bracket that was bolted to the ba10 needs to be flipped around and bolted to an open hole on the ax15. The bolt hole is larger than the one on the ba10 so the mounting hole on the bracket needs to be enlarged. Other than that, everything about the swap was a complete bolt on. USAFAGumby
So I made a mistake in input gear selection. Here is what I bought. http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/716053a--jeep-np231-23-spline-input-gear-for-short-transmission-shaft-stick-out-lengths/ I saw that the AX-15 takes a 23 spline short input selector which is why I went with this one. However, now that I look at it the "short" of advanced adaptors is 2.1'' of stick out, which is short transmission shaft length not short input gear. while "short" required according to novak is 1.2". I needed this one. The naming convention on the websites threw me for a $190 loop......... http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/716054a--jeep-np231-23-spline-input-gear-for-long-transmission-shaft-stick-out-lengths/ Gonna call them and hopefully trade since they are the same price. Also just bought the rusty's cross member and transmission mount recommended above. UPDATE: Advanced Adapters has stated that the long 2.1" input shaft would still work with the AX-15 assuming there isn't any serious play on the bearing end. Gonna keep it and see how it goes. xjrev10
That's a lot of cash to drop just to change the output shafts... 23 spline 231s can be had for $100.
USAFAGumby
Installed: I ordered the rusty's xmember, PB, and mount recommended above and they all fit great. The pilot bushing compressed and mushroomed a bit when I installed it so I had to have a professional remove it and install it so be careful when using the brass ones as they damage easily. The input shaft also worked even though it was the longer length. With it all together I found out the 4th gear didn't work and had to have it re-rebuilt (see my build thread for more on that). Overall that is how my swap went and I hope it helps someone else with theirs!
