Dom U
Hello Comanche club my names Dominic I'm new here and hope to get to know some of you.Iv owned numerous XJ and hope to be purchaseing my first MJ today. Anyways I wanted a couple inputs from people a little more knowledgeable on the MJ. So when I test drove it I noticed it took a couple turns to finally crank over, noticed I had to push down a good amount on the pedal to get her to just 35 mph. Once at 45 MPH speedometer needle shakes vigorously I'm assuming simple cable for the one. Okay now I engaged 4x4 to make sure it engaged, engaged smoothly BUT now I can't get this out of 4x4 and ended up parking it in 4x4. Also noticed the lights for the 4x4 on left hand side of dash didn't come on. Brake light is on. Please let me know your inputs. Its a 88 6cyl auto. With only 149k miles and I'm getting it for $1250
nitroxsteve
Its normal for the Renix engines to turn over a little before starting. I'm not sure about it being hard to get up to 35 you'll need to evaluate the power problem more. Your probably correct about the speedo cable. Were you trying to shift out of 4x4 sitting still? If so try shifting it while moving. 4x4 lamp could be a bulb but I wouldnt worry too much about that, you don't realy need it the shifter sticks up to let you know its in 4x4. Brake light could be the switch on the parking brake or low fluid level in the master cylinder. Check the floors for rust they are bad to rust from the inside out. Dom U
Thank you very much for the input nitro! Its much appreciated. Ill be sure to check the floor boards out. I did a Pretty good over view of the truck didn't see much rust, but ill be sure to check more.
ParadiseMJ
There are a few indications that the tranny has been swapped in by the previous owner(s) Lack of power...as in, if you have an auto tranny and 3.07 gears...have you checked? If you have a D35 the gears are likely 3.55, if you have a D44 they're likely 3.07's. The 4WD light not lighting could indicate that a newer tranny was swapped in with a newer T-Case without the vacuum set-up. Check your t/c to see if there is a vac switch and all the vac is working. Look on the paasenger fender for a blue vac switch (for the light) and if it's connected. The speedo vibrating indicates that the cable is not making a good connection in the square hole at either end (a.k.a. someone messed with it. The 4X4 not engaging could be because the linkage is out of whack...if someone put in an AW4 and didn't fix the difference in length of the tranny. Climb under there and look to see if the main linkage arm is cocked. Try putting it in 2WD while it's off and sitting in N.
Dom U
Thank you very very much for the information paradise. I'm going to thoroughly look over all the aspects you have stated.Should I be warry if the tranny has been swapped?
ParadiseMJ
Not really. If they did it at all, and did a decent job, but the no power/lack of power could be related to the gearing and your tire size. What tires are you running?
Dom U
Its got 235/75/15 I'm Finnaly picking it up this evening work had me over time last couple days so wasn't able to get it yet. Dom U
Replaced the power steering pump and lines today. Needs a Couple gaskets here and there (rear main seal). A leaking fuel injector, a pin hole in a air line. Ill probably find more but for now that's what I know I need. Can't wait to really break her down and get her running nice. Dom U
Ordered some fuel injectors from precisionautoinjectors last night. After seeing so many good reviews on here I had to get them not to mention can't beat those prices!
Dom U
Hopeing my previous statement was incorrect. I don't think ill need the rear main seal, I actually think just a simple valve cover gasket will do it. Seems after reading cruisers renix tips and better investigation seems to all be coming from the valve cover. Picked up the vavle cover gasket this evening and ordered a new front vaccum harness found a nice hole in it. Should be ready for pick up in the morning and ill be replacing them (:
Heavy Metal
My truck was lacking power when the throttle was about 2/3 or more. I found two fuel leaks, the first was fuel leaking into the vacuum side of the fuel pressure regulator (fuel in the vacuum line) and the other was due to a loose valve core in the schrader valve test port on the fuel rail. These two leaks were robbing pressure from the fuel system. I am sure that the leaking injector would cause similar symptoms, but you might want to check these areas too. glundblad
And as was mentioned previously, don't sweat the excessive cranking of the engine. I am one of the few on the forum that bought a Comanche new off the lot. It did that when it was new.
