thejim42 Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Anyone ever rebuild a high pinion Dana 30 for a Comanche? I have a one that had bad bearings and ring and pinion. How hard is it to rebuild?
johnnyc Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 It's not hard if you know what you're doing. :) And since I don't, I pay people to do it. It requires special knowledge and tools. Figure a couple hundred for a new R&P, a hundred for a master rebuild kit, which will have all the necessary bearings and seals. And I have friends that help me with the labor for another hundred. If you have to take it to a shop, they'll probably charge you $300+.
Blue XJ Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Ive rebuilt a few of them. Setting the gears properly is the hardest part. You reall only need a dial indicator and a lot of patience to do it though. Must easier to do on a bench then it is to do under the vehicle.
SW86 Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 I completely rebuilt and built up the current one I run. Only thing I didn't do was the welding (not necessary for basic rebuild) and gears. Everything else is easy and can be done with basic tools.
