AeroNautical
I've got a tool box on my short bed. Awesome thing, I use it all the time. Only down side is it eats up a good chunk of my bed space. I've got a bike I need to move often. Remedy? This bike carrier from harbor freight. I've seen some surprisingly high ratings for this thing, and many others. Never seen one before, but works like a charm. Connects to your 2 inch receiver, carrier supports up to a 400 LB bike. It's got a removable ramp and plenty of tie down points. I put a tail light so it doesn't cover my brake lights entirely, not sure about the license plate though. Won't worry about it until a cop pulls me over I guess, haha.
Pete M
neat! looks like it still blocks your right turn indicator though. :dunno:
AeroNautical
neat! looks like it still blocks your right turn indicator though. :dunno: Yeah, there are definitely some hitches (no pun intended) with it. License plate is blocked, lights are blocked, but above all importance, the Jeep tailgate is blocked!!
HOrnbrod
That is cool! Perfect if you have a canopy and need to haul your bike. I was going to ask how you loaded and unloaded, but looked on the Harbor freight site and found this. I like it.
yxmj
I have fabed a couple of these carriers in the past......you would have to mod it to solve your problems.....with mine I started with a 4" drop hitch turned upside down (so it moved the platform up) then put the carrier on that.....the bike will sit higher but your clearance is good. (and my whole carrier tilts so that you do not need a ramp.....it is roll on roll off) A simple trailer plug/light set mounted on the carrier will keep the blue lights out of your rear view. AeroNautical
I'm not actually worried about clearance, won't be wheeling with it attached, and I doubt I'll be coming across any steeply inclined driveways. I did put some trailer lights on the steel post so I've got the full range of lights, but the plate is still covered. You guys think it will really be a problem? yxmj
Zip tie the plate to the carrier when you have it on......
AeroNautical
Zip tie the plate to the carrier when you have it on...... I was more fishing for information on wether or not a plate has to legally be displayed when hauling something like a trailer or carrier. I've seen plenty of trailers without plates, and the vehicles plate hidden like mine. I suppose a google search would answer my questions, though. HOrnbrod
It wouldn't be a problem here in my state, but maybe NC has different laws.
danbyrambler
The folks at your local U-Haul probably know the LP display requirements - - Just a guess :hmm:
Incommando
Although I am sure that almost if not all states require as visible plate some places will be more sticky about it. If like Ohio you have a highway patrol that focuses only on traffic issues you are more likely to get bugged then by say a state police agency that does police work. Generally you will not be bothered and even if you are pulled over you won't get ticketed if all of your other stuff (license status, driving record, insurance) is good to go. Remember that if you do move your plate and you want to due it correctly it will need to be lit, as well. Good job on putting the lights/reflectors on the back of your rack. Not only is it much safer but it is generally required for anything sticking behind your vehicle (over 12" in Ohio).
