Homebrew. No really- home brew.

Hey I was just wondering if anybody else out there has tried their hand at homebrewing beer or anything? I just finished my first batch a couple of weeks ago, using the 5 gallon kit, and I am really pleased. I'm not much of a drinker, but I really like beer - in small quantities, and in high quality - Guinness is my favorite  In honor of the Irish, I brewed an Irish Stout recipie, basically just a boxed mix from my local homebrew store, and it turned out fantastic! The equipment cost me about $50, but the Stout mix was only $25, and for that price I got me 2 cases of some good quality beer. Who else has done some of this? I've got about a case left - anybody want to help me finish it off???

I tried my hand at it once. It was fun. I blew up some bottles and even made some that was drinkable. Wine making was interesting too. With both I found that if it didn't taste real good just drink some more and tell yourself that your creation is "an acquired taste". :D

Used to make it all the time years ago. I worked in a lab that had a constant temp room, so we would do our fermentations in there, then lager in an old refer.

Some folks were growing shrooms in the lab as well. Not me, you understand, but some folks . . . :brows:

i had a friend who made some of his own once, he had about 50 bottles but they were confiscated along with his pot and bb guns when the drug sniffing dog decided to check out the school parking lot a few weeks ago.

right before graduation! thats what you get for being an idiot and bring all your $#!+ to school

I had some homebrew beer once.

What an experience. My toilet will never forgive me. The floor probably wasn't too happy about it either.

Dirty, that's what I was worried about when I decided to try this. What I didn't want was to pass a bottle to my buddy, and have him say, "Whoa, what is this stuff? What'd you do, brew it yourself????" Mine turned out really good. If nothing else- it's the best $12 case I've ever bought

Jeff- that'd be great, if I wasn't leaving next weekend to be gone for the summer! That's part of why I need to finish it off, I (me and the wifey) am going up to upstate NY to work at a camp for the summer, and we're moving out of our apartment, so nothing perishable can go storage. Do you come up this way often? We'll be back in the fall, mid-August-ish. I'd love to take you up on that

one of my friends brews his own beer every now and then, i never drank it but everyone that has said it tastes good, but they said don't drink the last bit of the bottle otherwise it tastes skunky due to it settleing or something.

Yeah, the batch that I brewed, and a lot of the small quantity batches, because they are not pasteurized or over-filtered, have a little bit of sediment on the bottom of the bottle. Not much, but a little. I find that if I pour the bottle out into a glass, the sediment stays in the bottle. If I walk around with the bottle in hand, some of it gets worked up into the beer. I don't notice it, as it's very fine sediment, but I'd prefer it not be there.

I'm working on a batch of hard cider as we speak. Cider is a lot longer of a process than beer. Beer goes from brew kettle to glass in 3-4 weeks. I bought this cider in November, it's been fermenting and settling since then. I'm going to bottle it this week, and it should be ready to drink in another 2-3 months. The guys at the brew shop said the trick is, that the longer I wait the better it'll taste- I think that'll be hard to do, I've already waited longer than I expected...

It's probably not "sediment" in the normal sense of that term, but rather the remains of the yeast and various protein components. Many health food folks believe that it is quite good for you.
