I think if you take a tape to it you will find the pinion is a bit off set..( not perfectly centerd)....that would make the ring off set and by defaut the carrier...so one shaft is longer.

Let me rephrase:  What wasn't the the D44 (and some other axles like the AMC 20) diff housing designed to be centered so the axles could be of equal length and swap-able / interchangeable?

That would have been too easy, and too logical.

 

Remember, it WAS AMC we're discussing. As much as I liked AMC vehicles, they did some strange things.

 

However, in all honesty, it may not have been an AMC decision at all. It may have been Dana Spicer.

I do not know it would make things easier.....if I remember right some 44's (maybe on Scouts) were even more off set....like (I could be wrong) 1.25"-1.5"
