yxmj Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I think if you take a tape to it you will find the pinion is a bit off set..( not perfectly centerd)....that would make the ring off set and by defaut the carrier...so one shaft is longer. . :MJ 1: . That might not make sence but i think you will get my drift?
HOrnbrod Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 Let me rephrase: What wasn't the the D44 (and some other axles like the AMC 20) diff housing designed to be centered so the axles could be of equal length and swap-able / interchangeable?

As much as I liked AMC vehicles, they did some strange things. However, in all honesty, it may not have been an AMC decision at all. It may have been Dana Spicer.
yxmj Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I do not know it would make things easier.....if I remember right some 44's (maybe on Scouts) were even more off set....like (I could be wrong) 1.25"-1.5"

Incommando Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 The Dana 44 far precedes AMC. Looking around there are at least as many axle assemblies with uneven shafts as not.
