4.0 Engine/trans Rattle, Marbles? Video Included!

Sat for half a year, ran it a few times over that period.  Now I've got this metal marble rattle coming from the rear of the engine.  I just tightened the flexplate bolts, no cracks either.  Banged around the exhaust, it's tight as can be.  It's a 4.0L auto.  Was rebuilt in 2004 by previous owner.  I've always run synthetic oil and it doesn't leak.  Oil in both engine and trans are full.

Take off the flex plate shield and run it with out it.......see if it is the culpret .... :dunno:

 

After that I have a cheap auto stethescope that can be picked up at most parts stores............accurat enough to pick out a blown belt tention bearing with the motor running.

Another thing I forgot to mention is the starter.  I took it off and cleaned it and re-greased it a few months ago with a new alternator.  Could that somehow be hooking up to the flexplate?

 

I'll take a closer look at the belt tensioner but I doubt it.

your misunderstanding what I said......

 

.I was saying that the stethoscope I bought was sensitive enough for me to hear a blown bearing in the belt tensioner while the motor was running....

 

Your sound is not a belt tensioner bearing.....take off the cover plate on the trans first......(I actually took my grinder to my plate and slotted the bolt holes so that i can remove the cover without

dropping the stater) run it with out the cover......next guess exhaust......if not exhaust....... drop the oil pan and take the bolt/nut out that has worked itself in there.....  . :MJ 1: .

Took the starter out, the gear moved fine, I even tried it with washers under the bolts to bring it out a tad further.  That wasn't it.  I took the flexplate cover off and ran it, rattle still there.  I tried a large magnet on the oil pan to hold the loose nut/bolt.  Rattle persisted.

Flexplate is the flywheel for an auto trans.  If you mean spacer plate and manual trans there is a way a rock or something could have gotten up into the bell housing through the bell housing vent.  Auto trans bell housing may have a vent too but I'm not familiar with auto trans setup. 

 

The inside of the bell housing is generally so covered with oily gunk that I doubt anything rolling around inside it would make much noise.
