S10 Swing Away Spare Tire Carrier???

Recommended Posts

So i was at the JY the other day and saw a few chevy blazers, early 90s model, with the factory swing away tire carrier (really cheap $$$). Also saw a Bronco with one and i think a pathfinder. Has anyone used one of these? If so what would be the closest fit for the MJ? I'm thinking the boxier style s10 Blazers?? I know the lug pattern is different, so I was thinking of getting an adapter. Any input would be great.

So far this has been my favorite forum. You guys are awesome and super informative.

As in to use as a tire carrier on the back of the MJ?  Yikes.  There are better ideas out there..... as in a hinge mounted to a sturdy off road bumper........

I've seen bitchin' tube doors made outta S-10 tire carriers for XJ/MJ's.........

The lug pattern difference is the least of your worries.  The real problem is how to mount the S10/Bronco/Factory XJ swing away tire carrier to the MJ body.  The MJ box profile does not match the XJ body profile at the mounting point for the hinges at all.  It is an even bigger issue with the other junk yard swing away tire carriers.  That leaves the bumper mounted swing away carrier as the most reasonable option.  Problem here becomes the expense of buying a new bumper/tire carrier combination.  The factory offered a bumper mounted hinged tire carrier for the XJ in the early 90's.  Just have not seen one in the junk yard.  One or two were also offered after market, have not found one in a junk yard.  For the first couple of years of the Crand Cherokee, the factory offered a bumper mounted swing away carrier.  The pivot point was on the drivers side, which I like better.  Have seen one at a junk yard while on vacation in San Antonio (Yes, I said "vacation" and "San Antonio" actually visiting Anita's mom and brother for a few days).  Did not have the tools required so I just settled for pictures.  What I liked about this factory carrier was that it tied into the factory class 3 trailer hitch on the driver side for extra support bracing of the bumper mounted pivot point. By doing this and with an add on backing plate, the factory bumper was still used.  No need to design, fabricate or purchase a new bumper.

"One of these days" I may get around to actually getting a swing away carrier for the truck, but truth is I have not needed it in the 8+ years I have owned the truck and likely never will.  The factory 23.5 gallon gas tank gets me where I want to go and a second gas tank would be the only reason to move the spare tire.  Even then a front hitch mounted tire carrier would be much cheaper and easy to buy - I did install a front mounted trailer hitch for about $125 to carry a couple of bikes or my Honda Trail 90,  Also makes moving the camping trailer easier for me.  So I would suggest you take a hard look at buying a front mounted trailer hitch for an XJ (it bolts right on the MJ) and a receiver mounted spare tire carrier.  Your total cost should be $150 or less.  Problem solved with no fabrication required!

Are these a direct fit?

I just seen a few yesterday at the jy

Edit: sorry not direct fit I meant same size as the door way? No cutting to fit?

No, you gotta do a whole lot of cutting........ cut off the wheel mount bracket and other bits.  Then shorten the ends a few inches and weld on the angle iron for the hinge pins.  Fab up the latch mount.  That sort of thing.
