Dirty Deed's Diesel

Recommended Posts

Well you may recognize this Comanche from the "I need another Comanche like a hole in the head" thread , well it's home now and I started digging into it,..

So here are the "Find" pictures

Now yes it "looks" great but the engine is literally a basket case, Previous owner has an issue with how it was running, so he pulled the head off and had it rebuilt, installed it back on the bock and stopped,.. That was 5-7 years ago

These pictures were taken at 9Am today:

Parts:

What did I get myself into,..

The bits and pieces,...

My ammo to fight this fight!

So I started digging into the parts in the truck and found a few misc hoses,... :???:

Set the timiming thank to Automan's assistance and the use of a 5/16 drill bit, now I used a nut to hold tension off the belt but do I leave it there or just let the belt move? do I tighten it back down?

Digging throughparts and lookie what I find!

Can anyone tell me what the red wires are for???

Or where this ground strap is supposed to go?? Obiously the block but where?

Got some reassembly done :) Found I am missing some manifold nuts, Thermostat housing bolt,.. few other misc hardware

Figured I needed to get some extra jam out of the diesel so I made a performace mod :)

Any of you gurus have anothe rpart number for the Maifold to Turbo gaskett? This is what I have:

T0695216 Superceeded by J1038464.

Or is there a simular gasket used on a car/truck that I can actually get parts for?

Found these images for you

Should help with routing. Also basically all diesels are the same, Air system goes as follows:

Intake>Turbo>Intercooler>Intake Manifold>Exhaust Manifold>Exhaust

Coolant system as follows:

Water Pump>Radiator>Thermastat>Engine Block>Back to Pump

The Turbo should also have and oil system so that's probably where some of the hoses go.

Then you have Vacuum lines. I'm going to guess on the routing. Usually there is some form of a Valve that receives air from a couple of locations. One from the air in on the turbo so it gets atmosphere pressure/vacuum, another source will be from the intake manifold which supplies the pressure. The valve out should feed the turbo wastegate which will control your boost. I'm just guessing on this part because I'm used to working with more modern turbo setups but they basically all breakdown to the same setup.

On a side note did you check your turbo for play? It would be a shame to do all this work to have the turbo just blow up and ruin the engine.
