If you remove it from the trans, it has four different ways to put it back in, depending on the size of the gear. You should notice it is offset. It usually takes me a couple of tries to get it right.

that's only true if it's got a np231 transfer case....my 207 can only go in and snug down one way.

 

as for it going bad, it's just like any other gear...it can go bad if it doesn't have anough lube or if it's hammed on. check speedo cable for binding, which is unlikely, and check tcase for fluid. also be sure it's the right gear
