Turn Signal Indicators & Lights Come On When Brake Is Depressed

Recommended Posts

Hi Everybody,

I've read several posts regarding turn signal problems, but none like mine, so here goes. Mine turn signals worked one day and didn't the next. All of the bulbs have been checked and are good. The failure mode is as follows: The turn signal switch doesn't work, no right or left turn signal. If you press the brake pedal, both turn signal indicators on dash light up as do the turn signal lamps front and rear. I assume this to be a failure of the turn signal switch? Has anyone else had this problem and solved it?

What's interesting is that according to the wiring diagram, there is no common power connection between the brake lamps and turn signal lamps. What I'm witnessing shouldn't be possible. Another one of life's great mysteries I guess.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Could be the multi-function switch (Turn signal switch) Or just a crossed wire somewhere.

My guess is a crossed wire, If you jump power straight to the rear it backfeeds through the switch & turns on your dash blinker & Makes everything work wonky.

I seem to recall a similar issue and it was fixed by replacing the headlamp switch. I can't say for certain though so unless someone else confirms this I wouldn't hold me to it.

I had an issue similar to this and this did not fix it. But it seems to fix 90% of the issues with most cherokees (MJs too I would assume).

I have problem like yours and I would like to see where this goes.

My issue is the breaks and turns being on at the same time just like you. But if I turn the headlights on, my left signal works fine but my right stays solid. lol

Edit: I think my issue is caused my feed back from the running lights on the passenger side

I had a short in one of the front turn signal sockets cause this.

The “this worked for me” advice.

Try some diagnostics on your own to determine the cause. Just because my ride does ____________ and I did __________ to fix it, should actually mean nothing to you, unless of course you just like wasting money.
