Spare Tire Help

Recommended Posts

I have a 16" rim and a 245/75/16 tire that I need to mount in my bed as a spare. The issue I am having is keeping it secure in there so that someone doesnt just come up and take it. Does anyone have a tire mounted in there bed? How do you keep it secure? I know if I had a roll bar I could mount it there but I don't and can't seem to find one anywhere around here

Guess this is a stupid question on my part.  But why not just keep it under the truck in the factor location?  Should be a simpler solution that keeps the tire out of plain sight and is less of a temptation to sticky fingers.  If it is wheeling that makes you want to put it in the bed - move it to the bed on the weekend.  I like the KISS principle.

If the tire winch is broken, there are DIY articles telling you how to fix it.  (One day, I will fix my tire winch).

The bed has four loops, one in each corner. Get a piece of chain or bike cable and a combination lock to deter theft.

If you don't want it sliding around either use a shorter piece of chain or mount it under your bed; a 245/75/16 will fit.

Get the spare tire carrier from the rear of a TJ/YJ/KJ. Bolt that to the bed floor. Then mount the wheel onto the carrier and use locking lug nuts. As that tire is about 30.5" in diameter I am not sure it would fit under the bed anyway but this will take up a large portion of your bed, though. I am doing it as my truck will cease to function as a truck when I am done with the mods. My truck will be my DD '14 Patriot 4x4 with a 5x8 trailer.

There are mounts out there that attach a spare to the side of the bed so that it sits upright. Mounting one right behind the driver would cause the least line of sight incursion.

I welded a piece of angle iron on my frame to act as another cross member.  In the middle I drilled a hole and welded a big nut to it.   I lay the tire down in the bed so it is aligned with the crossmember I added (attached to the frame, under the bed) and then I run a bolt down through the rim into the nut on the crossmember.   Just make sure to keep the correct size socket in your truck to unbolt the tire.

Here in the rusted north there are no spare tire winches left. Because of that, good, working ones imported from the south go for close to what I paid for my entire truck to begin with.

Out of 10 MJs I know of within the state of OH, I know for a fact 9 do not have a tire winch left. No 10 is JohnR, who I believe is the exception to the rule.

I welded together a spare tire mount for my bed that looks reall good and is secure. Only problem is that i welded it to my roll bar. Another option is the in bed spare tire mounts sold online that bolt onto the floor of the bed and the tire mounts onto them at an angle
