conker
A little late making a thread but here it is. 1987 Chief 4.0 with the dreaded peugot transmission. the day I got it wasn't long before i started having cooling issues, broke a chunk of head off trying to change the t-stat in a parking lot Discovered a open bottle of gear oil was the culprit to an awful smell so i pulled the carpet/interior panels out.. ..and discovered this leading me to buy this and install it and nabbed a monte carlo bucket seat from a friends project car at the time puegot started acting up so i made my own drain plug tool, later finding my friends dad actually has the dealership service tool in his box at his house 85 on a backroad when suddenly a loud bang.. byebye windshield trim hit a bump wheeling and knocked my ghetto rigged exhaust off found out that in order for my clock to work for a full week (with memory, too) I just had to let my truck be outside during hurricane sandy rigged this up so my shift boot wouldn't pop off of the console when i went into 5th gear ear piercing squeal on the way to work and a nice burnt belt smell, siezed idler my axle leak got to the point of it draining out in a day instead of a month, so I re-sealed it Picked up a nates bumper with my tax return; may be stripping it and redoing it in bedliner this spring Fed up with cooling issues I looked into the closed>open swap and did that. a chrome bumper popped up on CL so I picked that up 3/11/14 I installed the bumper caps and a license plate bracket i got from a JY, removed my T-case, and installed a new vent window As of right now I'm taking out the t-case and BA-10/5 and have a ax-15 swap kit on the way from advanced adapters. conker
Tore into my 231 at school last night, I was amazed at how easy it all comes apart. I'll edit this post later with pictures, not that you guys haven't already seen the inside of a t-case a million times before.
conker
Installed the short throw shifter T-case shots I guess my peugot was leaking.. this is all that came out when I drained it. (I had drained/refilled it maybe 2-3k miles before it went kaputz.
conker
The french have finally surrendered! And my Ax15 is ordered from novak, now I just need to save up a little base fund before dropping the money on the swap kit from advanceadapters. glundblad
That looks like a factory roll bar with a factory bed light. Does the light work ok with the roll bar in front of it?
conker
That looks like a factory roll bar with a factory bed light. Does the light work ok with the roll bar in front of it? can't recall it ever not casting enough light in the bed the few times I've used it. djdr1988
I though the BA10/5 was the two wheel drive tranny. I wasn't aware that they made a t case for it
conker
Heyo look what came in the mail! Monday the kit from AA comes and then I should be able to get down to business, assuming nothing is missing/ i didn't forget to order anything (other than the clutch/pressure plate i still need to get) I though the BA10/5 was the two wheel drive tranny. I wasn't aware that they made a t case for it They put them in 4x4s as well, sadly. The input gear in a t-case for a 10/5 is like a 23 spline and for an ax15 you need 28 or something. Don't know exact #s offhand.
djdr1988
Oh. Ok. I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. I have the ba10/5 2wd in mine. It still drives alright, but the synchros are going out in it
conker
Took the clutch/pressure plate assembly out today. Looks good right? lol
conker
Advance Adapters kit. wound up ordering a 95 XJ master/slave combo from rockauto rather than work the yj slave into the mix. Put the t-case back together, nearly had a heart attack when i saw the old input gear sitting next to it and thought I forgot a part. Now my current snag is do I want to go heavier on the flywheel, go stock replacement, or see if i can clean up the rust transfer on it (see pressureplate/clutch pics above). conker
Man. I've been having my butt kicked by the pilot bushings. AA one was WAY too big, then I destroyed the first novak one, today I got the 3rd one seated and installed the new flywheel and clutch assy, its getting closer and closer to done! Now really all I need to get the trans in is to get nutserts for the crossmember. spent about 2 hours that could of been actual work on thinking up this goofy thing. two honda civic brake rotors, a 242 input gear, and 2 random nuts welded together to make an ashtray for in the shop. conker
I did thing today. Not sure why I didn't put the cpk and slave cyl on today but those and the crossmember/t-case are the next things to bolt up.
conker
Initially I thought I would be using the AA adapter plate and use my peugot trans mount, but this got my x member between the already made holes in the frame; So then I order a trans mount for a XJ with an AX15. And then I realize i need one for a wrangler with an AX15. So i buy that (thank you some random guy who had lots of info in his swap thread) and drilled out my x-member to accept the wrangler mount, and am now able to use the stock peugot x-member mounting holes. Torqued the bellhousing bolts, installed the CPK, and put the new slave on as well. I took the caveman approach here and drilled/cut a hole over that stud so I could put the trans up high enough to get the x-member under it. Dunno where my dad keeps the hole saws and all the stores were closed (9pm-3am garage sesh yo) so I still need to make the socket access holes in the x-member. conker
So I drove my comanche for the first time in 6 months last night. Had to install a t-case drop to get my t-case to fit due to my ax15 having the YJ(?) clocking. REALLY hoping this won't be an issue once I get my driveshaft on. Bet you can't tell where it was hitting the floor. (I love my airhammer) Lucky me I had this patch kit laying around so I didn't have to run around with a header dump until I had exhaust money. Planning on having the pipe shortened and doing a pre-runner dump out of the quarter panel forward of the rear wheel. Love the way the AX15 sits, always liked how high the shifter was in my highboy and this kinda reminds me of it, seems more truck-like.
conker
Chief is off the road again, brake booster failed on my way to work the other day so I had to tow it home and bang out my other truck. On the bright side I now have really no reason NOT to save up for a welder and do an SOA as well as all the other things I wanted to, since it's no longer the DD. Not even upset either, those 3 weeks I got to drive that 5 speed again were wonderful.
