SmthnD1ff
I have mildly entertained the idea of going doorless but after reading up on it I don't quite understand why Mj/Xj owners are cutting the bottoms off their hinges? Why can't you just drill the pin out and stick a one sided pin in the hinges without any modification?
Blue88Comanche
I was going to cut off the bottom of the hinge so I would not need to mess with the door shims. you could do it the way you said but you would need to take the hinges off the truck to remove the factory door pin. then the hassle is getting everything put back the way it should and the door be adjusted properly. SmthnD1ff
I don't understand why the hinges have to be removed? You can tap/drill them out with the doors and hinges on the truck?
Rockfrog
I have mildly entertained the idea of going doorless but after reading up on it I don't quite understand why Mj/Xj owners are cutting the bottoms off their hinges? Why can't you just drill the pin out and stick a one sided pin in the hinges without any modification? when you try to align the door and drop in two pins as opposed to just popping the door on/off by yourself you'll understand. Rockfrog
Meh, I don't understand the need to pull the doors at all myself. Half doors maybe ... but if I wanted no doors I'd just by one a them thar wrangler thingmes. My guess is it's just simply less hassle after the fact is all there really is to it. And the prime template is the CJ/YJ/TJ/JK door hinge layout ...
92tanMJ
The reason is as Rockfrog said, its to take taking them off and putting them on super much more easier. Although Ive taken my hinges off and have had no problems with the shims. All it was, was one piece of metal on mine. lol I had no issues with it. don't forget on some the passenger side needs cut at the top, hammered out and flipped over. The drivers side bottom gets cut on all of them though. And once you go doorless you won't ever want to have to doors on again lol But I don't get the "but if I wanted no doors I'd just by a wrangler" I guess I could say if I didnt want in trunk space/ passenger space/ and a short wheel base then I probably would have got one. There's plenty of reason not to get a wrangler. Going doorless doesnt out weight the cons of oneIMO
benjy_26
Meh, I don't understand the need to pull the doors at all myself. Half doors maybe ... but if I wanted no doors I'd just by one a them BARBIE JEEPS. There. Fixed it for ya! . :MJ 1: . Seriously, though, I do love having tube doors on my K5, but have never felt/seen the need for them on my ZJ or XJ's. The tube door/no door set up does let me see better out of the full size K5 in a tight trail, but I have great visibility out of the smaller Jeeps. I don't foresee needing them on the MJ either, to be honest.
SmthnD1ff
My only reason for possibly going doorless would be for fun cruising around town. My mj is a 2wd pavement princess and has never seen more action than the PO's back yard and a few dirt roads. I had a Wrangler years ago and loved that I could take the doors/top off whenever I wanted. I love my MJ but the only thing that has kept me from trading for a wrangler is its ac in this florida heat...

Rockfrog
I'd get pulled over inside of 5 minutes, given a Box 3 Vehicle Inspection notice, and a $196 fine plus cab fare to get home ... kinda put a damper my fun thoughts about doorless MJ's and XJ's. Not a whole lotta understanding types up these parts ... Although I do have plans for half doors on the XJ down the road.
Blue88Comanche
My plan was eventually get tube doors, warrior products has a nice set, and can have mirrors mounted to them.

I can run doorless, topless, hell even fenderless and the DPS doesnt really care one way or another.

Rockfrog
Around here even the wrangler get hassles as technically, by our driving laws, the only jeeps able to drive doorless were 1986 and earlier CJs as the doors were an option from the factory. Most cops don't care much but every so often you get a few hardasses ... and we got several on the Island here.
92tanMJ
Gotcha, that sucks man. :ack: I think I'm going to pick up some doors off CL this weekend to make half doors this summer :brows: Hopefully I can figure out how to make some upper soft doors like wranglers have...but nothing that fancy maybe just some of those span buttons and some kinda fabric? What would be even more awesome is if I could figure out some way to a'fix plexiglass in there so I could run half doors all summer and put the plexi in when it rains? oh my...clicky clicky since I can't link the photo http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/showthread.php?t=84388
