Dougster123
Will a I-6 and auto tranny from a 2006 LJ work in my '87 MJ? I'm told there might be some electronic concerns that would make it a pain. Have any of you performed this swap? Thanks, Doug
87Warrior
You would need the entire wire harness + PCM from the donor. The 42RLE is controlled via the PCM not a separate TCU like the AW4. I would not waste my time with a 05/06 4.0 with the troublesome camshaft position sensor. The 05/06 4.0 has already made its mark in history as being the least reliable 4.0 every produced. Dougster123
Engine + trany is less then 48k miles, I have driven it and know it's been trouble free so far. Others are suggesting the Chev V8 swap cause weight is the same with better mpg. Hmmm
87Warrior
Oil Pump Drive Gear Assembly, OPDGA, which is part of the camshaft sensor that replaced the dizzy. 05/06 are known to fail taking out the cam requiring a rebuild, and they are year specific. I love the 4.0. If I was in your shoes I would go for a '04 or older motor or a 5.3, if that is your cup of tea.
Alexia
The 42RLE is an absolutely horrible transmission that was never designed for a heavy Jeep in the first place. It might be fine in a lighter Comanche. I already killed one 42RLE and having to manually shift an automatic transmission to get it to work reasonably well on hills is just a bad design flaw. That transmission can make a love for one's Jeep turn into a life long depression that can only be cured by a big stroker engine and a proper AW4 transmission.
