pug Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Driving to work Monday morning about 5 miles from home truck starts bogging down and back fires through tailpipe. Pulled over won't start. I take of tbi cover starts up and drive to work (20miles) no problems. I get off work starts up drive about 5 miles same thing happens. Its being doing this the past 3 days any idea what it might be. 1990 2.5 tbi ax5
88whitemanche Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Sounds like a o2 sensor... What temp thermostat do you have? Is the truck heating up in time within these 5 min?
pug Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 New thermostat 195. Yes truck is heating up within 5 min
carnuck Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Could be fuel filter or TPS is getting moisture in it. I had to spray my '86's sensor twice a year. Sometimes the wires to the injector get frayed too. You can get "carb icing" with the TBI as well if the hot air hose from the exhust to the airfilter box is missing and you are in high air moisture and just above freezing temps. And as Cruiser54 points out, check your grounds because the spark will cut out if the coil loses ground.
pug Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 I did notice today one of the wires to iac motor was broke. So I unhooked didn't change anything also smoke was coming out of tb when I shut off. will replace fuel filter and tps has being replaced in last 6 months. thanks
carnuck Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 If you unhook the IAC, it won't open to allow air when you stop to keep it from stalling.
pug Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 I replaced wire harness to iac. Started up idles good 700rpm drove about 30 miles still good. Went to work still good drove home idels 1000rpm. looking tb looks like weld broke were throttle cable hooks on that opens up butterfly. Does anyone have a picture of a 1990 2.5 tb. I can show were it is broke. thanks
carnuck Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 If it's TBI, it looks the same back to '86. If it's MPFI, it's the same as 4.0L but with a smaller bore. 4.0L TB fits the MPFI 4 cyl to make more power but it makes a nasty whistle!
pug Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 It is a tbi . There is a lot of play were cable hooks on wanting to know if it can be fixed. Need a picture to show were the play is at
pug Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 Were the yellow spring is. Its the bracket that holds in place throttle cable hooks on to. Want to know if I can spot weld bracket to the pin that goes through spring to bracket. there is about 1/4 of play causing high idle.
