Power Steering Leak

In my experience, short of catastrophic failure, howling - oil every where etc. Power steering leaks usually come from one of two parts of the system, the pressure or the return line. Not sure, but I think the return can be fixed with some appropriate sized hose and some new clamps. My guess is your pressure line is bad, probably about $30 bucks for a replacement. Best advice, pull the air box, go from there...

Kind of hard to tell without pics or being there...

Agree with 64 Cheyenne.

 

Both lines are available from RockAuto. The pressure line has hard lines at both ends (pump & pwr steering box) with crimped hose in between...the big crimps, like AC lines if you have AC. It would normally be replaced as an assembly. The return line is just a hose (pwr steering hose) that is crimped to the reservior port and also the hard line at the steering box. These are the little crimps that are more like small rings, can be cut with pliers or wire cutters.

 

When you replace the return line, use hose clamps at both ends. If you think the leak is coming from the return line at the reservior, you could cut the ring crimp and replace it with a hose clamp. This is where mine was leaking from, but it was a crack in the glue that attaches the reservoir port to the reservoir. I wound up replacing the hoses and reservoir.

 

FYI, it can also overflow if it's overfilled, looking like a leak or escape from the cap if the cap is not screwed on tight.

 

All the fittings, pressure pump port and steering box port are a PITA to crack loose. If you go there, be patient and use a good quality wrench or big adjustable. Access makes it even harder to get in there.

The steering box seal has also been known to leak. I have had Great results using Lucas Steering stop leak. I don't usually condone the use of products like Lucas but I have had 2 Jeeps now that had leaky Steering box seals fixed by it.

 

That is a good product. It fixed a couple of Pitman shaft leaks for me too.  :thumbsup:

Replacing the entire pump/reservoir is not difficult or expensive.  If the hoses are OK replace the pump and the O-rings.  Bleed & flush properly, brand new system.

 

Except for the steering gear. As far as I can tell, the OP doesn't know where his leak is yet.

My MJ is leakin powersteering fluid and I think it's the res or the pump

How can I tell

 

 

i was under it a few nights ago and the res has a crack it looks like to me

Except for the steering gear. As far as I can tell, the OP doesn't know where his leak is yet.

 

I thought he had nailed it down to a crack in the reservoir.
