husky410ohio
I have an old Chevy 350 motor with an SM465 trans. and setup with a hydraulic clutch bearing and an advance adapter for a DANA 300 transfer case but no transfer case on it. Will the original transfer case on truck fit the adapter? It is an 1988 long bed Comanche that had a four cylinder and manual trans.
mj_lover
from what i know, the bolt pattern is the same as a np231, the d300 has a 23 spline input..should work with most np t-cases
pingpong
I would call AA and ask them. Or you can try to bolt it up, but there is no guarantee that the fitment problems won't be obvious till you put power to it. Patrick
DirtyComanche
It should fit, but the spline count will most likely be wrong. Most of the early NP tcases were 21 spline input, AFIK. Later were all 23. So, you'd need a new input gear for your tcase.
husky410ohio
Thanks all for the replys. I need to take it apart and see what I have. I hope to have time this weekend. Anybody know how the trans. stick comes off the Jeep manual. It looks like it is two pieces but I see no screw or pin holding it. I pulled The carpet up and took the knob and rubber boot off the shifter stick. Looks like you pull it straight up to remove it. This is forum is great! 87manche
I'm not sure about your 4 cyl trans, but on my AX-15 the shifter is in two pieces. Let me try and explain. The shifter itself was held in the shift tower by a Dzuz fastener like lock. Puch down on the piece with the hole in it and turn it to the counter clockwize and it would pop out. There is a spring in there. After that the shifter just pulls out of the shift tower. Or, you can take the whole tower out. On my AX-15 it's held on by 4 bolts , I don't know if you'll be able to get to them without taking the center console out.
Bounty Hunter
The transfer case off the 2.5L is likely 21spline, and the output for the D300 is likely 23spline. Otherwise the bolt pattern should be the same, and your 231 would work by swapping out the input shaft. To remove the shifer for the AX5 (if that's your stock 2.5L tranny) you have to go further down torward the tranny and lift up the round rubber boot on the shift tower. Depress the spring-loaded locking ring under this boot and rotate it and it'll pop right out. Or remove the 4 bolts holding the shock tower on, turning the spring loaded collar is the easier of the two.
husky410ohio
I got the transfer case out and it is a 21spline NP231. I was missing a stud to the transmision and it look like it has been apart before because there is blue ATV silicon all over it. Also I feel a lot of chain backlash but I do not know if this is normal. I wish I could just buy an atlas case but that is way out of budget. This was a $100 truck. I want to rebuild the transfer case but my Hayes manual said do not try this too many parts for a do it yourselfer. If I get a shop manual would it tell me how to swap out the shaft? pingpong
If you buy the right(expensive)snap ring pliers, I am sure you can do it. You will need a 13mm socket, a torque wrench, a 1 1/8 inch socket, as well as a think it was a 15mm. not hard, especilly since you have it out. patrick
