neohic
40k+ btus? Really? Been looking at a bunch of online garage heater calculators and finding around 15k on propane once everything is insulated.
87manche1
I usually deal with ng that's around what I have. Propane burns hotter.
87manche1
At poor insulation I have 78k btus to heat up the air 40 degrees. So say ur rooms 50degrees heat out put wold be 90 to heat the space. To heat the air up 10 degrees it was 18k btus.
airspeed
I installed a Modine HotDawg HD30k. This works great in my over size 3 car with 12' ceilings. It has a powered exhaust so you can rout it horizontal if needed. $399 with free shipping.
87manche1
Airspeed those are nice. Once he's insulated 30k will do just fine. Hard to find smaller in a shop hanging unit.
ParadiseMJ
Atleast start with the walls  Our garage is finished, insulated walls and ceiling. It was still cold in there until 2 yrs. ago when we put insulation on the door. Now just the water heater keeps it bearable...of course "sub-zero" around here is about 30F. Point being, the insulation makes a HUGE difference. ...and we're not even hooked up to any sewer.
Bhfear
I have one like you posted in a two car garage with a drop ceiling with lots of blow in insulation up top and regular insulated walls it works good. But i leave it on low and it has a thermostat so i turn it way down at nite but i rarely turn it off completely. Like someone said previously if u think ahead of time it will work good.. gas was not an option for me as lp is costly and id rather not suck the tank down anymore than the house already does. xjrev10
I installed a Modine HotDawg HD30k. This works great in my over size 3 car with 12' ceilings. It has a powered exhaust so you can rout it horizontaly if needed. $399 with free shipping. This is what I'm getting next year. I use wood now which works great but as others have said, mess, more work etc. I replaced my fuel oil boiler in my house this fall with a propane boiler and plan to run a line from the tank to the garage. So one tank for house and garage on keep fill. Talked to the company that installed my new boiler and for a 75k btw Hot Dawg it's around $1500 installed. I have a 32X32 with 12' ceilings. Plan to keep it at 40 degrees all the time and turn up to 60 when I'm working.
92tanMJ
In our "back shop area" (its a CMU walls, with two large bay doors and a 36" metal door. Area wise it's probably 50' by 100' if I had to guess) We use a propane heater and I think it works great. It heats it up real quick. We probably go through a tank or two a month..but it goes on the floor so that probably wouldnt work for you
