tomken front rock bumper, updated (installed)

Recommended Posts

Anyone run one of these? I've got the chance to pick one up for short cash once the wife and I get back from vacation next week (instead of building one). It's not a winch bumper  , but does have a 2" receiver. I may have to trim the front fenders for it to fit, but I was planning to do that, eventually, anyhow :brows:

Any comments welcomed....

thx,

Jeff

This is the only pic of it I have....haven't seen it yet in the flesh. Looks like short sections drilled for the 3 bumper bracket bolts is all (but I snagged a copy of that tie-in you posted, and could have a set of those made and welded on in place :D )

make the tie ins and it will be plenty strong.

I wouldn't weld them to the frame though, as I think the forces involved in revocery might cause the welds to induce stress fractures in the front end.

I'd bolt them. Trust me, if you catch the sleeved bolt hole already in the frame with a 1/2" grade 8 bolt you're not gonna pull it out :D

also, the tie ins go on the outside of the frame, so the bumper must bolt to the inside, or you'll have to modify the bumper so it will work with the tie ins.

not gonna weld to the frame, just gonna replace what's on there with new tie-in's

I'm still not sure I would weld them on like that, because then if you had to take off the bumper to get at anything, or even to repaint it you'd have to unbolt the steering box. After fighting to get it back into place the other day for 45 minutes, I don't think I'm ever unbolting that bastard again, until it breaks.

The JCR bumper bolted to the plates using the stock three holes, I think that they would be more than sufficient. Not sure what the breaking point is for 3/8 gr8 bolts, but it's gotta be a lot.

I can tell you I snapped a 3/8 grade 8 bolt with a 2 foot cheater bar  You just havent changed your steering box enough... I can swap one in about 20 minutes :brows:

I've snapped 5/8 bolts with a big enough breaker bar, but that's a torsional load and not a shear load. I think it would take a lot more to break it under a shear load.

so I got curious and had to find the numbers.

a 1/4" grade 8 fastener had a shear strength of 4700 lbs

a 7/16" gr8 bolt has a shear strength of 15900

and a 1/2" gr8 bolt has a shear strength of 21300

I went out and looked at the bolts supplied by JCR, they were not 3/8, but rather 7/16.

So, a single gr8 7/16 bolt is capable of almost 16K pounds of force before it shears.

I think it's gonna be alright, considering there are 6 of thsoe holding it to the tie in plates.

mjeff87, looks good. I dig your AMC logo, how did you do that? I'm new to this i-net stuff, pics., avatars, etc., so I have no clue. mjcanoe

Sorry for the late reply....

Find a small pic that you want to use as your avatar, and save a local copy of it on your PC. Then, under your Profile, scroll to the bottom of the page and enter the path to the file where you saved it, and click upload. The pic cannot be larger than 150X100 pixels, and 21 kb. If it is, you can resize it.

Well, I ended up getting it last night. It'll work for now, until I scrape up the money for a winch, then I'll build a winch bumper. Compared to Pat's rear bumper, this Tomken is considerably lighter ;) . It doesn't have D rings, but it has a receiver. The tie-in plates are meh.....they only use the 3 bumper bracket bolts. I'm going to have a set of those other plates made up and get them welded in place of them jamminz.gif

Overall, for what I paid for it, it's decent. Pat, I bought it from a buddy of yours (Randy) from MPJAI. He's in school here at VCU, and says "hey" :D

Thats cool Rabdy is a good guy.

Bring that on by the house when you come down... I think I might have some beefier plate to beef it up in the mounting area by then.

I don't know what Tomken charges for that bumper, but it looks to be made out of 1/8 stuff, and if you are a jeep abuser or use your bumper as a ramp... It will bend :brows: The front of my Rigid CO bumper has some nice dents in it, and it is made out of 1/4 :hmm:

Yeah, it's 1/8". I went to pick it up last night to put it in the bed and nearly threw it right over my head. I'm used to handling....heavier stuff :rotf:

Got inspired last night after work and decided to test mount it. For now, I tied the brackets into the tow hook brackets (including the L shaped front ones) I already have on. I had to notch out the front of the tow hook brackets a tiny bit, but other than that, it was a bolt-on job. I’ll probably end up taking the tow hook brackets off and building a new bracket altogether, so I can tuck it a bit further back toward the grill. But for now, it’ll work.

Couple pics…..

Sticks out just a wee bit

got to clean up underneath, but here’s a front shot

had to notch the bracket a tad (in hindsight, I should have notched the bumper instead of the bracket, but oh well…..)
