My 1-week DD rebuild...

Recommended Posts

I'm making this thread just to prove how slow I work... I have one week without work or school, and I NEED to fix everything that is already wrong with it or likely to go wrong within the next couple months. Mostly because I hate working on my DD when I know I'll need it, and it's currently a cop magnet.

Problems:

-2 wrecked motor mounts - FIXED

-radiator with a hole in it - FIXED

-bad tranny cooler lines - FIXED

-bad thermostat - FIXED

-exhaust 'issue'

-wiring and cosmetic issue on tailgate

-bent front bumper end (no front tag either)

-whether strippg/window crank issue - FIXED

-broken grille and cracked header panel

-rust spots, ugly paint in general

-horrid rear leafs... too stiff

As it sits right now.

The bad radiator is out, and all the front end crap is off.

The motor mounts I removed.

Obviously they were a little over-due for replacement. As I could tell by the exhaust hitting the tranny crossmember. Major PITA to change.

Rust...

I hate dealing with doors.... but it must be done.

Liftgate...

The wiper doesn't work, the speakers are messed, and I need some mounts for the panel.

Exhaust 'issue'

Window issue...

The track is bent, so it doesn't work too well... However, I remember I have a couple extra doors in storage that have good tracks/glass. So, I will pirate what I need.

I had better get done in time. I'll pick up a replacement rad and tranny cooler lines tomorrow (I hope).

I like your exhaust "issue" :D

Good luck gettin er' done!

Wish the weather would stay warm enough for me to start wrenching... or wish I would finally win the lottery so I could finish my barn.

It's been CRAZY warm here for the last 3 days. We're talking 21, 22, and 24 degrees C... That's like 70-75* for the southerners. Something has f'd up with the weather but I'm NOT gonna complain. I just hope it holds because I don't have any garage space unless I move the MJ - which the XJ is boxing in now.

We had a flash rainstorm today and I really didn't get too much done.

My 'new' radiator... $25. It looks alright, hopefully it won't leak or anything.

Well, at least it fits... The c-clamps are because that radiator support is bent (bad sign) and I wanted to make sure it was going to snug up good without hammering.

I took all the emblems off. They were all done with that f'ing black tape. So, I broke half of them... I RO sanded the header panel and cleaned up the cracks for repair, only to find I'm out of long strand bondo.

Part of the reason why I didn't get anything done was because I picked up this 'gem'. A lovely F-1-$#!&ty axle. I'm gonna do bad things to it

Well, I don't think my radiator leaks... But, one of the tranny cooler fittings finially blew apart - after I went to the trouble of fixing the rest of the lines :headpop: Now there's a really big stain on the driveway

So, I fixed the MJ with every intention of going to the junkyard. Then used it to push my POS XJ out of the way. Then promptly decided that maybe I should do some body work to get myself into a better mood.

I pulled the side window I need to replace. And the messed regulator. I wish I could find the 97+ windows instead.

I got all the rust fairly well cleaned up, both front doors torn down and pretty much ready to mask. Just need to do the rear doors and the hatch. About 90% of the thing is sanded.

Now, the only question is... What colour? Since I'm doing it anyways. I'm limited to fairly basic colours as I'm rather cheap.

I have on hand:

-Flat black (umm, I want this thing to be nice - so no)

-Gloss black (Thinking about it... I'd probably have to paint inside the doors then)

-Gloss dark blue (It's darker than the pain that was on it)

Also considering

-OD green (maybe)

-Dark gloss green

Any other good ideas?

I have decided that the MJ will get the rustoleum hammered paint. I know that the texture will look weird on an auto, but it has a nice gloss, is easy to touch up because the texture hides stuff, and it will also hide my crap body work.

I fixed the tranny cooler lines finially. Dumped in a bunch more red stuff that I hope is compatible with the AW4 and fired it up. The whole tranny cooler line fiasco get's a 5 out of 5 for the swearing factor.

Then I masked everything off, and did some bondo-ing, and an initial cleaning.

I forgot to mask the tail-lights, and I should probably take the rear bumper off (not feeling like it). I'll tie that up tomorrow, clean it again, and then paint.

I'm not going back into the garage for a while.

But basically I rushed too much. It was to windy too do it outside, so I did it inside. Somebody misplaced (not me) my respirators. I have TWO of them just to avoid that. So I did it with just a dust mask. Stupid stupid. I'm probably gonna start puking. Because I hurred, I mixed the second coat wrong, and it was too thick. Then I ran the crap out of the third because I mixed it worse.

And I forgot to blow down the base of the windshield. So there was stuff in there that blew out and landed on the hood.

Anyways, that was my first time doing a vehicle with the spray gun. So I learned a whole bunch from that. Ah well. I might wait for it to set up and try to take off the runs with a razor and clean up the other flaws and hit it with a thin coat.

dab the runs with a paper towel, then just sand them a little.

do the same to the crap now stuck to your hood, remove the peices and dab them with the paper towel and the sand em a little when it dries. Maybe you can then put one more coat of paint on.
