5 Speed Trans In An 89

Recommended Posts

I bought an 89 MJ that was torn apart, got the 4.0L running, guy I bought it from said the 5sp needed rebuilt, no one would do it so I decided to replace it but I have the Peugue(?) trans and no one could get it, so I bought an AX-15 sense they are stronger anyways but the AX-15 did not come with a bellhousing, for the last 2 months I have been searching for a bellhousing for a 4x4 AX-15/4.0L and have been unsuccessful thus I am left with this question, if I stole the bell housing off of a 2wd AX-15/4.0L would it bolt up to mine? or could I get a 2wd trans and simply change the tail shafts?

any light shed on the subject will be greatly appriciated and much stress will be eased, thanks for your time

I don't believe there is a difference in 4x or 2x AX15 bell housings. One thing to consider is installing a external slave housing which came out in the mid 90s XJs. There are write ups on that and you wouldn't have to drop the tranny if the slave cylinder goes bad.
