mpace6a
So, I got death wobble a while back. This past week i changed my ball joints, and while i was at it the axle u joints. Seems to have solved the death wobble, but theres still a clunk in the front, seems to be coming from the drivers side. Mostly just hear it when making left turns, sometimes on right hand turns, but nowhere near as loud. I know i need new swaybar bushings, but aside from that and ball joints, I'm not sure what would cause it to clunk? Any ideas?
Jerry
When the sway bar bushes wear they contact the coil spring on hard lock. If that's what it is you're likely to see marks on the spring. Did on mine anyways.
mpace6a
Thanks I'll check that out. Also, just noticed I posted this in the pub and not tech when i couldnt find it in the tech section....I'd move it myself...but don't have the glorious admin powers to do so! H3RESQ
You might also check all your link bolts. Specifically the lowers at the frame. They might be moving back and forth a bit. You can usually have a second person grab each side of the tire and rock it slow and forceful front to rear. While there doing it watch all the link points and see if any shift. While your at it have them slowly and evenly steer it lock to lock and look at your track bar, tie rods, etc. and make sure that they are not shifting a little. Also watch your steering box, pitman arm (this may have the shaft going south) This will also give you a chance to check the above comment about sway bar hitting coils. Hope this helps. 2 people can go a long way in figuring out a noise over
cruiser54
ALWAYS check the tightness of the track bar bracket to frame rail bolts. Put a wrench/socket on them and give a good pull on it. Â This was such an issue when the Jeeps were new that we took it upon ourselves at the dealership to do this in the pre-delivery inspection. mpace6a
Didnt get a chance to fix anything, but did figure out the swaybar is hitting the passenger coil, and has rubbed a small groove into the trackbar mounting bracket, so thats getting replaced tomorrow. Thanks for all the tips guys, I'm gonna go through everything tomorrow with my brother, see if i can find anything else that may also be giving me issues! Get the poly sway bar bushings instead of rubber. I did this a year ago and wish I would have done it a long time before, especially since my MJ is my DD. Stays nice and flat on highway ramps and sweeping curves.

1989 Eliminator
I know you solved your issue but I actully found that the bushings on my steering stabilizer went bad and the ends twist and clunk from braking and accelerating.

1989 Eliminator
yeah to check that just take ahold of the steering stabilizer and try to twist it. Pretty easy replacement if it is that!
