Electrical Gremlins On An 88 Jeep Cherokee

Recommended Posts

What's ups guys

Need all the help we can get....my boy bought an 88 jeep cherokee but when he got it the gas gauge was busted because it doesn't tell you the level if gas it has and no brake lights....turn signals worked great but brake lights are out! Just yesterday his night lights didn't come on at all

Any input is great or any suggestions in where to look first! Thanks

It's an 88 4.0 5speed 4x4

Definatly check all the fuses first of all. Then check the relays and see if the prongs are all still good.

I would also HIGHLY recommend upgrading your grounds. http://comancheclub.com/topic/36311-updated-renix-grounds/?do=findComment&comment=363512. This will solve/prevent a lot of electrical problems.

The brake light problem could be either of the above, but could also be due to the brake like switch. If it is the same as my 89 MJ, that could be the issue.

If this is what it looks like, try rotating this and press the brake until you get a brake light. How this switch works is when that spring is compressed, it activates the brake lights. When is not compressed, the lights are off. So, to fix this, place a spacer of some sort (bushing, washer, ducktape) It has to be really small and rectangular shape. So modify what you can. TOO MUCH space will be bad since this will be activating the brake lights all the time. (this connects to the end of the brake booster rod and to the pedal assembly)

Thanks for the info....check at the fuse panel( no leaks) , I did send him cruisers link for upgrades and ways to diagnose and upgrade his cherokee....but that truck is a wire mess! Wires in the engine that lead to somewhere I don't want to mess with and so many bull crap speaker wires going on....we literally took so many wires out that truck that I was happy that the truck even started!

I told him after we plucked so many wires out that its best to send to a mechanic that good on electrical work...I had a guy work on my truck after fuses kept blowing and wires were melted....so he'll be sending his cherokee over to him in Friday....better to have a professional work on it than us amateurs messing something up worse than before....

As for 1989 eliminator when I looked at the brake switch it looked like it had separate wires going directly to it....

So I got the dash lights to work and headlights and brakes due to a grounf wire not being grounded..... the problem now is the gauges still don't work.....any ideas what to do or what to check? Grounds? Anything? I'm trying to help my boy out because funds are extremely low

Thanks for any input

1989 eliminator- Sorry forgot to mention that all fuses were changed and the pins have been picked so they grab more contact to the fuses....

No lie this truck is an electrical nightmare....

There's only so many wires to mess with but already handled most of the dangling loose ones either being pulled because they were useless loose wires or some crazy speaker system that the previous owner attempted to put in there
