Wtb: Future First Comanche, And Advice Needed

Hello fellow Jeep lovers. It's been a while since I've been here (almost two years), not that I was all that active to begin with. In that time though, I've managed to acquire jobs that actually allow me to spend money, including a new full time job I was just accepted for. That means I'll be able to afford a winter beater, aka the Comanche I've always wanted. I think I have a rough idea of what I might be looking for in one, so here's the list:

Year: 87-92

Chassis: Short Bed

Engine: 2.5L or 4.0. We have a 94 ZJ with the bulletproof 4.0 that is probably the only thing that hasn't broken on the thing, so I trust them. I'm also used to owning four cylinder engines, so they're familiar to me as well. I'm open to either one. Hell, I'd even go for the rare 2.1L diesel.

Transmission: Manual. I've driven stick almost exclusively since I started driving, and I'd prever to keep it that way.

Drivetrain: This is where I'm somewhat conflicted. I live in Crystal Lake, IL; we get snow around here six months out of there year here, so I know how valuable four wheel drive is. I've also read many accounts of how reliable the two wheel drive version of the Comanche is even in winter, even without the rare factory LSD. I'm not opposed to working on my own vehicle by any means, so swapping in a different differential or changing to four wheel drive at some point in the future is not a problem. I would appreciate some advice on this choice from you knowledgeable folks.

Interior: Bucket seats, although I've seen others swap in buckets from other vehicles, so I'd love to know how easy that is to do.

Condition: As stock as possible. Not looking for anything with a lift kit or large tires. I plan on choosing my own options down the road when I'm more knowledgeable on aftermarket parts for Jeeps

I think that about covers it. If I've forgotten any key options, please let me know. Any other advice, besides the stuff I read in the "What every Comanche Owner Should Know" thread would be appreciated.

I'm looking forward to finally getting a Jeep of my own, and learning more about these awesome vehicles.

All I can say is, if you are ok with the 2.5L, don't count out an '86 then since it's all the same otherwise. Most stay away from '86 rigs because of the 2.8L, don't buy that unless you have plans to swap a 3.4 or something else in anyways. Good luck finding one of the 2.1L unless you are willing to spend closer to 10k than not, and even then parts are hard to come by. Swapping in buckets from other vehicles is as easy as having the MJ bucket brackets to stick the new seats on, or making your own since they are not super easy to come by.

I can also add that the 2WD rigs are very reliable in snow. My '88 Eliminator I had only took a bit of rocking and it pulled out of being basically buried in the driveway one winter.

Yep, George and Richard Prior were my all time favorite stand-up comics. Both were druggies, both were lewd, crude and socially unacceptable, and both were extremely funny.

:hijack:   Oh, and OP, no worries. We don't usually highjack threads this badly.

No worries, I actually just came back from a week long trip to North Carolina for car shenanigans on the Tail of the Dragon. Coincidentally, I was also in the town they filmed Deliverance in.

I also love Carlin, as if that wasn't obvious. I've been meaning to get "All My Stuff" and then tack on "It's Bad For Ya" for ages now.
