jimoshel
Will a 231 direct swap for a 242? Assuming the spline counts the same?
Oddmodman
AFAIK it depends on the year of said 242. Unfortunately I don't know the years myself, but I made a topic similar to this at one point. I was told that if the 242's input is of medium length (the 231's is short), it should slide right in and bolt up even though the 231's is shorter. Someone needs to confirm. mvusse
The input shafts depend on the transmission that was in front of it, not on the year the transfer case was produced. If the input shaft is the same spline count AND the same length, the case itself will be a direct swap. Depending on year and what vehicle it came out of, you may need to modify the harness, or get a new switch for the transfer case to retain the 4wd or full time/part time lights on your dash. You will also need a shift gate and bezel for the 242, and possibly the shifter link rod. With the trouble I have had trying to use a 231 rod I think the 242 might be a slightly different length. I remember swapping it all out when I went from my 231 to 242 (but I also went from an AX-15 to AW4 and the same time).
jimoshel
I have a XJ missing the 242 and a ZJ with a bad 242, I got a half a dozen 231. Guess I'll just line everything up side by side and compare.
JeepcoMJ
They bolt in. The shift gate is wrong on the shifter. You can cut it to remove and swap out, or swap the entire shifter. You will need the shift arm off the transfercase to be xj/mj specific, but that's an easy swap with one nut. You will also likely need to adjust the shift linkage, and obviously swap the bezel. But so long as the input spline is the same, you're good to go. Basically, you need a 231 of similar vintage for the xj, and the zj will need a 21 spline IIRC.
