Crossmember location with AW-4

Recommended Posts

I am swapping an I6/AW-4/NP231 into my MJ that was originally equipped with a Puegot and 2WD.

Can anyone who has an auto and 4WD tell me where on the framerail their crossmember bolts up? I have everything in position but the crossmember does not apper to line up with more than one hole or stud.

Thanks for any help.

off of the main unibody frame rails there are additional supports that come off to the side and go up towards the rockerpanel. the rear holes of the cross member line up the holes that are on the main frame rail directly inside the side support. hope this makes sense

I just finished doing this and you either have to tap the holes for the crossmember to line up where it would fall on the tranny or you have to fab up a different offset plate to get it to line up. I had to do the offset plate. I will get pictures later today and post them.

honesly I think it should mount right up. are you using the tranny crossmember FOR the aw4 or are you using the one for the peugot? and do you have the rubber mount that's FOR the aw4 or did you mount the peugot one?

edit: I just went out and measured the difference between my friend's aw4 cherokee and my ax5 comanche and my bro's ax15 comanche and they are all the same...so i don't know what you're on :chillin:  but something isn't right there....unless the puke-goat is COMPLETELY different. but these cars were produced on an assembly line...which stands to say that they would make everything as interchangeable as possible. it SHOULD bolt right up.

go back and trace your steps, and figure out if you used everything from the aw4, if you got that tranny mount backwards etc...

I think I understand what you mean. I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

I was thinking about building an offset plate. I'd be interested in seeing what you put together when you get the pics.

The rubber mount from the AW-4 never came off the trans so it's orientation is the same as it was in the XJ it came from. I also never had the Puegot in the truck. There was no driveline when I got it.

I do think it bolts right up but it's not going to mount in the exact same holes. The only thing I can think of on the alignment is that the driveline might be cocked towards the driver side frame rail, screwing up the crossmember alignment.

umm....check where you bolted the tranny to the crossmember, you may have it shifted over a set of holes? I'd re-drill the tranny mount holes before i'd mess with the frame mount.

is the crossmember FOR the aw4? if not then get one FOR an aw4 and use that...should solve your problem.

There are only two locations for the crossmember, and the two positions only use three holes. The forward set is 10" back from the LCA mount, and the rear one is 14" back. If you research longarm conversions, you'll run into the question of whether you want the kit to fit the "10" specification" or the "14" specification" -- that's what they're talking about.

You may have to move a stud on each frame rail to align the crossmember in the correct location, but if you have the correct tranny mount you do NOT need to drill any new holes.

The Puegot and AW-4 crossmembers are the same part number. I'll check the mounting holes in the crossmember to make sure the mount is in the right spot.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look tonight.

Are you sure you don't have the crossmember in backwards?

good point. Although it looks symmetrical, it isn't. If you put it in 180 degrees out, things won't line up properly.

That was one of the first things I learned when I converted the MJ to 4WD.....drove me nuts for over an hour until I flipped it around  . Now I index it any time I take it off.

I had a customer bring their 00 XJ into the shop with a bad vibration. They had had the rear leaf springs replaced and the axle shimmed by a local axle shop. They even installed a t case lowering kit, new u joints you name it they tried it. I put it on the hoist and the tranny and t case were in there crooked. I unbolted the crossmember and flipped it around, removed the lowering kit and no more shake. Just a thought.
