'86 Xj Steering Column

Just got thru swapping out the steering column in a '86 XJ. Swapped a '89 into it. GEEZ but that was fun,,,,NOT!!  Took about 6 hours. 1/2 hour to undo all the electrical plugs and connections and mounting bolts and redo them. 5 1/2 hours to get the steering shaft back into the Ujoint. I separated them at the Ujoint directly in front of the firewall. :fs1: Everything works OK now. Never again. I'll scrap the vehicle first.

Couldn't have been a rust issue! I just swapped the column from my '91 over and I probably had that same six hours in swapping over the column and the entire dash and wiring.  :shake:

The only column I ever did, I slid the shaft off the steering box.  It was keyed, so getting the new one in the same spot was no problem.

Same here.  was pretty straight forward (especially since that particular truck had no engine or dash or wiring harness :rotf: ).

 

 

Never again. I'll scrap the vehicle first.

 

 

I swore the very same thing about the rear plugs and then the steering pump in my caravan.  ended up doing them again later on anyways.  both projects were surprisingly easy the second time around. :dunno:

The '89 steering column I removed at the gear box. Still had the compression shaft on it. I thought about removing the '86 the same way. Don't know why I went the way I did. At the time it just seemed the way to go.
