jeepnut_99
I have a 92 2x MJ with a 2.5,ax5 combo, I also have a complete drvetrain (2.5, ax5, np231) from a 93 YJ. Any way, does anyone know if the YJ trans will work ok for this conversion?...Scott
JeepcoMJ
it will
Pete M
I'm guessing it might rotate your t-case up slightly like the YJ/TJ AX-15 does.
jeepnut_99
Thanks guys, I was thinking that it would, but I wasn't sure. I just wanted to double check with you guys before I dove into this. I have seen alot on the conversion with the 6cyl, but not the 4. Will there be any clearance problems that you know of with the floorboard if it clocks the transfercase up? I'll keep you posted on the progress...Thanks again...Scott
JeepcoMJ
If the t-case is rotated up, there may be clearance issues...but if you're handy with a big hammer or welding that shouldn't be an issue. also you may need to change the 4x4 shift linkages? but an np231 is the way to go for sure. Eagle
My '88 MJ has a YJ AX-15 and 231 that were installed by (for) the previous owner. The t-case is clocked slightly higher, but I see no evidence that they modified the floor pan at all. If there is a clearance issue, expect it to be very minor, requiring slight work with a bumping hammer rather than a sledge hammer. The YJ t-case linkage goes right on the case and will NOT clear the dashboard in an MJ even if you hack the floor to let it poke through, so pick up a junkyard XJ 4x4 shift linkage before you even start. tjbliley
I just finished converting my 2WD MJ w/ 2.5 and AW4 to 4WD. I have no issues with the TJ np231 I am using as far a clearance goes. I finished it and 12 hours later it was in the woods. you will have to use the XJ interior linkage and then measure the linkage coming off the t-case to the pivot mounted on the tunnel. there are three sizes available and you need to measure. Also the interior plastic for the t-case shifter can be found but it is difficult. you need to find a column shift 4x4 XJ, maybe 85-89 range, and get the small bezel for the shifter. I am still looking for mine. Nevertheless, it can be done and you will create a great truck in the process.
JeepcoMJ
he has a manual not an automatic...so all that stuff about the column shift auto cherokee means nil to this particular thread. the center console for the manual tranny is easy enough to find if you don't have it...and i seriously doubt that you don't have it
tjbliley
My reason for pointing out the need for the bezel is that if you do not have the bezel, a small one that will not crowd the tranny tunnel can be found in the column shift Auto XJ. That way in an already tight cab you could get away with let clutter right in front of the seat. And no I do not have a bezel yet. I have a solid bench seat without the notch and I would like to wait for the samll bezel so my kids have leg room.
JeepcoMJ
ok i get that. but he's already got a manual trans (ax5) so he's got the manual shifter and clutter there anyways...

The bezel would be just the little plastic "ruler" that pops over the shift handle to tell you what range you're in. Sounds to me like you're talking about a mini-console. Those are readily available out of low-end Cherokees.

jeepnut_99
Thanks guys for all the info...I have almost all the stuff needed as I saved almost everything salvagable from my '87.(R.I.P. ) I just have a YJ ax5, and was concerned about compadibility. I do however think I may have misplaced the x-fer case shifter, so if I can't find it, I may need another one of those....Scott
