Ground Point For Battery Cable

Recommended Posts

I was refreshing my grounds today and noticed the PO had ran the battery ground to the dipstick stud. I havent had any major issues until recently but was wondering if the battery ground needs to run to it's own grounding point. From reading Cruisers ground tips sounds like it has its own point. Also, I have pulled the engine bay wiring harness out of my parts truck and i'm wondering what sensors (MAP, Temp Sending unit, etc) from a 4cyl can I use on my 4.0.

AFAIK the battery generally grounds to the dipstick stud.  Never seen one that didn't, but it's also common to ground to the body right next to the battery as an auxiliary.

Also, I think the only sensor that differs between 2.5 and 4.0 is the CmPS, but given that it's built into the distributor (and that TBI 2.5s don't even have one), that's not really a consideration.

I have the regular ground at the dipstick stud. There were two other grounds there, the connecting ring terminals had corrosion all over them. I thought that ground point was the way it came from the factory as my XJ was the same thing. I also put another direct from the battery (8 ga.) to the fender nearby. The original cable was half green and half shiny...aka FUBAR, and I had multiple problems with lights, accessories etc. beforehand. I also replaced the ground strap from the block to firewall with a 4 ga cable on recommendations here.  I noticed immediate improvement in electrical performance.  Almost all my electrical gremlins went "pffft" and disappeared forever.

I can't say enough about the change it made in my MJ.  All for about $8
