Gas Leak At Sender Unit

Recommended Posts

Whenever I fill up the tank, i get a gas leak at the sender unit. I crawled under there expecting to see a bad seal; instead I found this.

It looks like the sender has had a leak at where the wires enter the unit. I'm wondering if anyone has seen this sort of failure before and if it's a normal and/or repairable failure?

If not and I have to replace the unit, are all the senders the same. This is on a 1992 4.0L long bed. Would earlier years and shortbed senders be the same thing?

Thanks for any insight. I know I could scrape of the sealant the PO put on to see what's going on, but then I couldn't drive the truck if I screwed it up. For the moment, I'll just keep it below 1/2 full until I can get a replacement.

Thanks

The sending units have the tendency to rust out around the metal lines.

They are no longer available new but can still be had from scrap yards or other members on this forum. You will need a 91-92 sending unit as the 90 and down setups will cause your gauge to read backwards. ;)

If its actually coming from that specific hole where the wiring is coming through...there's a prong on the other side of that. That's probably already had broken there's a write up here to refurbish the fuel sending unit don't have to do the whole refurbishing but mainly the part of the o-ring towards that part of the sending unit that leaks gas.... Ask how much it hurts losing more than half of tank of gas at 3.89 a gallon just for that stinking o-ring!!!!!
