What Tire Size Won't Rub.

Recommended Posts

1992, 4WD auto. Stock height.

When I bought the truck, it had 255/70-15 tires on it. They are old and a mismatched group. As others have noted, they rub (probably on the control arms) at full lock.

Since my 2 daughters drive the truck pretty often I'm considering replacing the tires.  I've come across a set of used Uniroyal Laredos for a good price that are in decent shape and already mounted on jeep wheels. They are 235/75-15. I seem to remember that others have commented that this tire size will not rub. Is that correct?

Thanks for your help

My 30x9.50-15s do rub, but not much. Generally, 235/75-15 is the largest tire that doesn't rub but, once in awhile, even those may rub the LCAs just a little bit (usually only on one side).

If you want 100 percent certainty -- 225/75-15. I would rate 235/75-15 as about 95 percent certainty, and that's my choice. One reason is that Goodyear still offers the original Wrangler radial in that size -- and that size only. You can buy them in any Wal-Mart for $87 per tire, and IMHO they are far superior in just about every respect to the several new "Wrangler" lines that have followed the original.

I have multiple sets of 235/75R15 tires. Some rub (but just barely) on the driver side control arm, some do not. I have also ran 225/75R15, which is the largest size offered from the factory, without any rubbing whatsoever.

WJ Grand Cherokee (1999-2004) lower control arms will cure the rubbing issue with 235/75R15 tires and probably a bit larger than that. However, if you have a front skid plate, much larger than that and they will be rubbing on it.

From all the different designs, there are only two stock sizes: 15x7 and 15x6. I use 15x7.

Now not all 235/75R15 tires measure exactly the same. I have multiple sets, and as I noted before, some rub, some do not. And the ones that do will quit doing it when they get worn down a bit from use.

but, does the offset change on all the different wheels? i don't  know..i just know that we have ran both size tires and about every make of 235/75/15 on it before the new tires and never rubbed on a 96 xj with the stock country wheels that look like spider web einki wheels
