Hey everyone my name is Rob and I'm new to Comanche Club.  I been on Cherokee Forum for almost a year since I got my XJ.

My MJ is an 1988 MJ, 2WD, I4 2.5L, I think its a 4 speed manual, on 235 Winterforces.

My XJ is a 1990 XJ Laredo, 4WD, I6 4.0L, AW4, on 235 A/Ts.

I recently bought the MJ off my brother since he's moving. Thing is I don't know how to drive a manual and I don't have much time to learn.

I currently live on Fort Drum, NY near Watertown, NY. The link in my signature is to my XJ build on Cherokee Forum.

Welcome!

Could very easily be a 4 speed.  I wish I'd found CC before I got my first MJ, I didn't know about the existance of the AX-4 at that point, and thought there was something wrong with the trans in it. (it had a 5 speed shift knob on it)

My dad was able to get me good enough on a manual to go out on my own in about an hour.  He would park on an incline facing upward, and have it roll backward slowly while I found the catch point.  It's a little rough on the clutch, but didn't take me long to figure it out.  Now I can't stand driving an automatic.

 Congratulations on the truck!

Driving a manual isn't hard to learn. It's easier to find a deserted dirt road to learn on though. I remember how I learned to drive a manual. My grandmother's second husband wanted me to go to the video store and rent us a movie to watch. I was 16 and had never driven a manual. He said "you have a dirt bike, it has a clutch, the truck is the same just switch your hands and feet". Then he threw me the keys.

I forgot to mention its got a sun roof! Which seems out of place. Everything in the truck is manual, such as locks, windows, no cruise, manual transmission, even the sun roof is manual. There are "sport" decals along the body of the truck but I don't think sport was a model in 1988. Maybe the sun roof is aftermarket or a dealer option?

Factory sun roofs are rare on MJs and I don't know of any aftermarket sunroof companies so I'd be willing to bet yours is factory. Back then Jeep let you pick whatever options you wanted without any restrictions. That's why you sometimes see weird option soups like your otherwise base model with a sun roof.

Welcome to the family! The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Helping eachother is why we're here. Oh, and feel free to post as many pics of your truck as you dare. Pics are always appreciated.

Does the sticker happen to say SporTruck on it? If so, it's a pretty common cosmetic package for 87-90 and you're right, the Sport option was a late 91 through 92 thing.
