Ax5 Fluid

Hey guys

Clutch is acting up might be low on fluid going to check on fluid but if I do need to add fluid what weight or type of brand should I use?

Fluid for the AX5, which is the transmission would be 10W30 synthetic motor oil, fill until it comes out of the fill hole.

 

For the clutch it would be DOT 3 brake fluid, there should be a full line on the reservoir.

 

Neither should go down to where it is running low unless you have a leak somewhere. A hydraulic leak in the clutch system can be very problematic, just like a leaking brake hose, because you can't build pressure. If it is the master cylinder leaking, fix it fast before the fluid dissolves your fuse block under the dashboard.

Ok how do I check my tranny fluid? I see a spot where it says do not remove that's the only spot I see accessible to see the fluid level.

Is there another spot to check?

 

1st two pics are of left side if tranny and the last one is the right side

There is a plug on the Passenger side? IIRC. Use a ratchet extension to remove it. remove the plug and if no fluid runs out, fill in that hole til it starts to run out and reinstall the plug.

Not on hand. its just a round plug with a square that fits a ratchet extension. Not hard to locate.

Wait a minute. I can use motor oil for my tranny? Then why do they sell gear oil separately? I spent alot more money on gear oil than I would have on motor oil, haha.

I recommend Redline MT90 if you want smooth as butter shifting even in cold weather.  It's a full synthetic that is specially formulated to be easy on the synchros.  

 

Careful what gear oil you use as many GL5 rated oils are actually corrosive to the soft brass synchros in the AX5 and AX15 transmissions.

Most common gear oil is GL5. GL5 gear oil will eat the brass synchros.
