1988 Jeep Comanche Stalls, But Not In Neutral

Recommended Posts

Hello.  I recently acquired a 1988 Jeep Comanche 4X4 4.0 Automatic.  My truck stalls but not in Neutral.  The truck will want to cut-off when I drive, but will not if I am pressing the gas pedal.  It will just cut out if I am coasting down the road.  The truck never seems to even threaten to stall when it is in neutral.  In fact, sometimes when I can feel a stall coming on (or I can anticipate a cut-out) I throw it into neutral and the truck keeps running.

I have read several dozen of posts here and I know it could be anything that I am willing to throw $$$ into replacing.  I am have done all the  work myself: tune-up, fuel filter, cleaned the throttle body, cleaned one ground on the firewall.  I am not the greatest of mechanics, but I do love this truck.  I would also love to drive this truck without worry of an accident from a stall.  I am hoping this neutral observation will help identify the issue, as it is somewhat unique to what I have seen posted from other CC users.  Thanks very much.

To whom it may concern , I had a new 86' Comanche in my youth and after two years of driving it beyond limits off road .I had the same exact problem too a tee, and after paying the dealer $1,500.oo   to diagnosis from front to rear it ended up being that the fuel tank baffle came loose and created a hair line crack in the fuel pump and the motor was starving for fuel. I repl. them both myself for about $400 bucks at the time and the problem went away. I hope..... this helps....

Hi Jeeper.  Your retell about your 86 Comanche going beyond limits off-road makes me jealous!!  If I had the fuel pump replaced already would that make any difference?  No, correct, because they would not have replaced the fuel tank baffle?  I have to look up what that means.  The stalling stopped completely after this?

I am glad you responded with this.  I am at a loss with any 1 of the 1,000 things (and endless $$$) the stalling problem could mean.
