AeroNautical
Thanks for that, just ordered it off of rock auto. The guy showed it to me before I bought it, I knew it didn't look right.
88PioneerChap
Hello everyone, I've been lurking here for a while but just now joined and this is my first post. I have an 88 Pioneer with a 4.0 that has idiot lights and I'd like to convert to gauges. Can anyone tell me if this cluster would work? I'm not sure what year model it came from and the compatability years listed by the seller don't say 88. My gut says it would work, but I'd like to hear from someone more knowledgable. Thanks in advance. Speedometer Instrument Cluster, 1984-1987 Jeep Cherokee, Wagoneer USED
onlyinajeep726
IIRC, those years used the smaller square peg for the speedo cable. If I were you, I'd look for an '88 - '90 XJ/MJ cluster.

Thanks for your help. I'll keep looking. Actually, I did find one from those years but the clear screen/cover is very dusty, can that be seperated and cleaned? The cluster looks a little beat up and dingy, but if I can at least take off the front cover and clean it it might be ok.
onlyinajeep726
Yes, the clear cover comes off... A good cleaning is probably all it needs.
Butchershop
Ok. Thought I had this figured out, but need some help. 88 2.5L had a 'new' cluster when I got it but no oil pressure or temp sensors were working. Cluster says 1988 cherokee (JY noted). Has gauges. Not lights. Does this sound right? 1988? Or is it possibly a different year? Speedo hooks up and works fine. I took this oil pressure sensor out. The brass fitting came out with it. What do I need to do when I put the brass fitting back in? Possible to get a new one? What year sensors do I need to get? Oil pressure and temp? Do appreciate the help! onlyinajeep726
You need to get the right sensors... The one you have above is just a high pressure "on/off" oil switch. The temperature probe functions the same. The correct oil pressure sensor and temperature sensor looks like this, below. The temperature probe and sensor look near identical, but function is quite different, so it's important not to mix them up. Both can be bought brand new for relatively cheap. Butchershop
Ok. Picked up the parts, but the threads on the brass fitting are toast (other side from the picture above). Hoping A*Zone or Lowe's has one. I'll measure, but looks like 1/8"?
Butchershop
Murphy here.... Got a new brass fitting. Looks just like old one. But the new oil pressure sender is so much larger than the old switch that I don't have clearance enough to get it in the 90 degree brass fitting threads. Not enough room to eliminate the fitting either. Is there a smaller sender? Anyone ever use an extension? (Move to Tech section?)

You may have to source the more common one from a junkyard, it looks like the one in the picture below (the hexagonal thing). Should clear fine with one of those. Also, don't put teflon/thread sealer on the threads of the sensor. It needs to make a good connection with the block because it's grounded through the engine. If it doesn't make a good connection, the gauge will read all sorts of funny if not just peg out. There should be a little o-ring that goes around the base of the threads that seals it against the hexagonal adapter (as seen in the first picture I provided in a previous post). The same goes with the temperature sensor in the back of the head.
hassyfoto
OK, I have read the posts and find a have a few issues and questions; My MJ is a 91. I have a automatic on the column, therefore the dummy light cluster has the letters for verification of what gear you are in. I have looked at numerous 91 & up clusters with the gauges, but nothing with the letters to indicate the gear you are in in/on the cluster. So, is there an alternative? Or I just haven't tun across the correct vehicle yet.is Everything I have looked at has had the gear shifter in the center console.

You may have to swap the individual gauge out (the one with the little gear indicator window) and put it into a cluster with the full gauges. Or, eBay a full cluster with gear indicator already in it (IIRC, there are a few from factory like that, but I'm sure they're rare). Edit: Found something that may be of use to you... http://comancheclub.com/topic/14086-upgrading-to-a-gauge-package-w-column-shifter/
