I'm going to look at an AX5 and 231 out of an '01 model to replace the AX4 and 207 in my '86. From what i've read the swap from an AX4 to AX5 is pretty strait forward. But the difference in years has me a little worried. The AX5 will come with the bellhousing and flywheel and has the newer style external slave. Do I have anything to worry about? Should I use my existing bellhousing or switch to the '01? What about the flywheel? Is there any reason to swap the '86 flywheel for the '01?

You should keep your current bellhousing.  You could use the newer external, but the slave will be on the other side, so you'd have to deal with a new clutch line.

You cannot swap on the 01 flywheel.  As far as the clutch is concerned, they're all the same, but the flywheel needs to stay with the generation of the control system.

I do have a concern though, 00-01 2.5s are almost unheard of.  This AX-5 is from a 2.5, and not an AX-15 from a 4.0, correct?

I was thinking they were phased out of Jeeps way before 2000 as well, however, upon some researching for my own knowledge, I found out this...

The AMC 150/2.5 L engine was used in the following vehicles:

It's from a Wrangler. I know the tail housing has the transfercase clocked 10 degrees further up. But from what i've read that's the only difference.
