87MJTIM
I found the part number, but it does not give a size. J400 6964. Check with a dealer for the size.

Geonovast
Last time I pulled a 2.5's starter, they were identical, and freakishly long. Don, I think the ones you posted are for a 4.0. The 2.5's starter mounts to the block.

The 2.5's starter mounts to the block. Here's how I did it: Looked up the p/n's for the 87 2.5 starter bolts (they were not the same), then crossed them into the 97 and up parts manual for the 2.5 because the newer manuals give the bolt specs. The p/n's matched, and those were the specs for the two bolts. Also it stated the 4.0 and 2.5 used the same starter bolts. :hmm: That's what I got. Geonovast
A quick Googling brought me to a Jeepforum post, which states that it's a 4" long 3/8" bolt, didn't say thread count. Here's the two side by side.

I don't know what the books are smoking, but the 2.5's starter bolts are definitely the same, they're fairly long, and bolt vertically up into the block. I don't see how that could have ever been changed later on without modifications to the bellhousing, which I've never seen evidence of. Unfortunately I only have personal experience pulling the starter on one 2.5, a 91. :dunno:
HOrnbrod
OP, Correy has a lot more real world experience than I with the 2.5. I'd listen to him.
Geonovast
You may or may not have room to get a socket onto a regular hex bolt though, that may be why they went with torx. I remember it being a tight fit. Or they used torx because that hate us, like they did with the top 4.0 bellhousing bolts.
njcomanche1227
i had ordered two bolts from chrysler mopar parts that i thought were the right ones and it did look identical to my original but it was to big and wasnt even close to threading in. The stock bolts were definitely the inverted torx and that why they had fallen out in the first place i never had the tool to tighten them properly f*** torx!! anyways the picture of the two bolts the torx one looks like what i got from chrysler i looks like the length is good but needs a smaller diameter bolt. I work at a local goodyear and they have a bunch of random bolts i took so I'm gunna try to see if i can at least match up the thread count and go from there wish me luck in these sub-zero temps here in nj. 87Warrior
The 2.5 uses these starter bolts: Starter - (2) 3/8-16x4" Listed on page 3 of my '86 build. I used the parts book for a '99 XJ 2.5 to determine the size, went to NAPA and bought the bolts as the hardware store didn't have them.
