JFAComanche6
My NP231 transfer case has a bunch of JBweld on the bottom from the previous owner (the t-case works fine, I'm assuming its just a small crack) and I'm just wondering if theres a better way to seal it. It keeps leaking now and I'm tired of it.
foreman1063
Get someone to TIG weld the crack.
Biotex
I doubt you'd get the aluminum clean enough on the inside to TIG it properly. Even if you got the outside stupid clean, you'd get oil seepage through the crack once it got hot. IMO you'd need to gut the case and have it hot tanked or boiled out to fix it once and for all. Just my thoughts here. I'm not a professional welder, but I have a good friend who is. He skills are just awesome. I've watched him plenty, and he spends more time prepping the surface than actual welding.
foreman1063
Absolutely, needs to be cleaned first, I had one done on an old land cruiser that held up fine. Before I spent to much though, I would find junk case on cl or in the junk yard and use the housing to replace the cracked one.
Geonovast
Seems like you'd be better off just replacing the 231.
JFAComanche6
Get someone to TIG weld the crack. I can sort of weld aluminum, but is it a good idea with cast aluminum? I would love to just replace it even though the t-case works perfect, but I don't have a job yet.
ParadiseMJ
When I was swapping my trans I had to find a matching t-case. I found several at the JY for $40-50. Worth the trip, and the grime.

Put the case in an oven and get it hot first, or use a rose bud tip on a torch and preheat the area to be welded first. You want the metal to expand and settle in before welding. Then weld it and let it cool slowly. You don't want to shock those aluminum molecules!
Bounty Hunter
I've had a few 231's welded with no problems. It would be worth it to have it professionally welded.
mvusse
For the cost and hassle I would just go to the junk yard and get a whole new transfer case. Jeep NP231 are a dime a dozen.
