U-joints

Recommended Posts

Any difference on U-joints between 2x4 and 4x4? I got a rear U-joint to put in over the weekend, got the 4x4 brut force joint went home and put it in and found it to be about 5mm to short after I put in the clips. Not sure if the 4x4 joint is different or the guy at advance gave me the wrong one like the last time :headpop:

It was short in both the DS yoke and the yoke adapter on the 8.8.

I haven't heard of anything like that. Maybe they gave you the wrong one again? I always bring in the part I'm replacing if at all possible. The guys behind the counter are not to be trusted. :D

Thanks,

Last month I changed the front axle joints on my Ranger and the guy at Auto Zone sold me the wrong ones and could not even find the right one with the old one I had. I went to Advance and got the right one first try. Sooo this time I went to Advance first and :headpop: I got the wrong one

What makes me really mad is the fact I keep trying to get a PT job at Advance / Auto Zone to help with the MJ build and I get passed over for someone that has never wrenched in his / her life and when I tell them what I need they look at me like I have two heads.

ugh. u-joints. last time i asked for an axleshaft u-joint and he looked at me like i was out of my g-d mind. i was like... NOT a d/s ujoint, an AXLESHAFT. the one right next to the tires.

what'd i get? a d/s u-joint... how long did it take me to realize it? oh, just til right before i had to put the new clips on the installed joint. DOH! wrong clips, DOH wrong joint, right size.

:hateputers:

National chain auto part stores are like shooting dice in vegas. Best to take in the old parts for comparison and if think you jeeps are a problem my dad used to have a 78 intl. scout II (they're built from whatever could be bought cheaply Dana axles, Ford hubs and brakes, GM and AMC parts as well)

Anyway to continue my u-joint saga chunked the precision from oreilly's went to the shop that shortened my shaft to get a spicer brand and ended up with a bruteforce solid body (they were out of spicers) he says I should get at least 2 years out of it and it shouldn't break but then those guys drag race and offroadiing is much harder on parts.

Yea, I don't expect the brute force to last any longer as far as bearing life goes but maybe the solid body will keep it from dumping the driveshaft on the ground. Anyway if your like me there is hardly a week that goes by that I don't roll under the truck and check stuff out. Lately since my last excursion off road the exhaust is squeaking in the rubber mounts and it is precariously close to the driveshaft now (time for that upgrade anyway).

my biggest b*@$£ with those joints is that they're not serviceable. I'm convinced that if I could have greased those regularly that they would have held up better.

Post mortem on both the joints showed that they had simply rusted on the inside, likely from repeated dunkings in water/mud and no new grease to force that nasty out.

That's exactly what my dad thinks, if they were in car not being used offroad they would probably last 100k or more but used in the mud, sand and water that we see around here and at our ranch I'm sure it won't live that long due to being non serviceable. My uncle used to work at one of the best 4x4's shops in the country (they built pre-runners for Roger Penske) said that they would only use MOOG or Spicer u-joints. He's now a heavy line mechanic on dump trucks and concrete mixers and the only thing that keeps their u-joints in place is greasing them at least twice a week. He said if you don't grease them often they will fail in a matter of weeks in that offroad environment.
