Another Suspension topic....

Recommended Posts

A buddy of mine is coming in town next weekend to put a new motor in his VW Thing. I help him, he helps me with my truck, so its a perfect time to put a lift on.

I'm planing on ordering the re 5.5 mj kit from 4x4groupbuy.com tomorrow. Also I will be calling Alcan for new rear springs.

So my questions are:

Anyone know how long Alcan normaly takes to make you a nice set of springs?

I've heard people say the re kit is the most complete. So if it's the MOST complete whats it missing?

Anything I should look out for my 1st time lifting a truck?

Anything I should buy?

I really want to do everything right so if I could use it but don't have to have it I want to buy it. This truck is my new baby. 8)

Thanks in advance,

Kendrick

Now it's time to put my new TB on I got from Artsound on ebay... jamminz.gif

Start hosing down all the bolts and what-not with PB Blaster asap!

NEW BOLTS!!! The control arms and leaf spring bolts. You can safely reuse the existing ones...but what if they break or get the threads mangled?? If you have a good hardware store close buy I wouldnt worry... If not, just go buy new ones and install them along with the kit. You'll be glad you did!! Keep the stockers as back up out on the trail.

Also, I assume you have the equiptment to weld? Your gonna need it for the rear spring perches. This kit converts you to SOA.

Can't help with the RE kit, but can with Alcan. Talk to Charles Carter. Great guy. He will ask about 100 questions regarding weight distribution, lift requirements, and how you plan to use it, etc. You will also most likely have to take some measurements. They can design a custom set based on your requirements, or copy the stock specs from the regular 4-leaf or HD 5-leaf metric ton springs if you give him the part numbers. Last time I talked to them (over a year ago) lead time was 3-4 weeks to design, build, and ship. Cost ran about $220/spring excluding shipping.

Good point. Also get new leaf pack U-bolts. Not good to reuse the old ones; they are usually stretched out to max after the initial and followup torques. I'd get these from Alcan also if you go with them, because they will prolly recommend 5-leaf or more springs, and you'll need longer bolts. Also Charles will want to know which rear end you'll be using for the correct U-bolt ID.

If you haven't ordered your parts yet and you are expecting to install it all next weekend you may be out of luck. It really depends on if RE has the stuff in stock to drop ship. I've waited five weeks before on lift kits where parts of the kit were back ordered.

As for what else you will need... If you don't make at least two or three trips to the auto parts store and the hardware store you are a lucky guy! Even when you think you have everything something always comes up.

Good luck!

i use Simple Green concentrate on everything. from seats to degreasing engines. the stuff's a miracle!

if you use concentrate you'll get everything off. don't get the scented stuff though, it's too strong of a scent even in a mix

Thanks I'll try the green.

Will there be any issues with my truck being 2 wheel drive? I know I won't be able to use some of the parts, but I'm wondering if there is anything else i need to get since it's a 2wd?

Thanks.

Well, if you're using the Alcon springs, then the whole leaf difference is moot. It's actually a bit better starting with 2wd since you can have your rear driveshaft cut down to the exact length you need. You will need the t-case shifter assembly, including the mount on the underside of the body.
