insaneclowns04
Hi guys i am new to the fourm and new to the comanches. i just bought a 1986 2.5 5speed tonight. One problem that it as beside it not running right now is. that when i hit the brakes the brake lights come on and the also the front marker light and the turn signals light up on the dash. The brake light and taillights work. but the turn signals don't work work at all either. So my question is do you guys have any ideas??? i thought maybe it was something to do with a ground problem. But don't know where to look the ground to check to see if they are good. thanks for any help. i am ready to get it on the road.
ftpiercecracker1
first and easiest step is to pull and check all fuses, from there check all bulbs, pull them, clean the sockets thoroughly and replace as neccassary. But to be honest your number one priority should be to either find another engine or fix the one you have. Welcome to the group :wavey:
insaneclowns04
well the engine runs but not right now i have to put a new fuel tank and pump in. it has a holes and won't hold fuel long enough to even get it to stay running. but i have had it run... and thanks for the idea
Kernel
sounds more like a ground problem so after you check/replace your fuses and while your checking your bulbs find your ground wires and clean them up. my '87xj & '91mj had similar problem. AMCJeepMJ
Hazard light switch or relay gone casters up? IIRC with the switch engaged and foot on the brake, it will illuminate all corresponding lights [brakes, front signals, dash directional indicators]. cruiser54
I suggest unplugging EVERY electrical connection in the engine bay you can find, whether engine related or not, and spraying it out with a good electronics cleaner, visually inspecting the terminals making sure they haven’t retracted into the plastic holder, and then plugging it back together. There’s a critical 10-pin connector for the front lighting system located in front of the air cleaner and behind the left headlight assembly. Don’t miss that one. Also be sure that the connectors to the ballast resistor mounted near the air cleaner housing are clean and tight. ALL of the relays should be removed, the terminals wire-brushed until shiny, and the receptacles sprayed out with contact cleaner. Then plug them back in. I do this on every Renix Jeep I purchase or work on for someone else. Revised 07/23/2012 There also is a critical ground behind the left taillamp. Can affect taillamps AND electric fuel pump. Refresh it.
Biotex
The ground for the rear tailights is behind the drivers side tail lenses assembly. The ground for the fronts are on the driver side inner fender up high, about in the middle. Make sure all bulbs are correct. The sockets themselves have been known to lose their grounds, so look for that also. To help isolate the problem, you can disconnect the front harness at the connector Cruiser above mentioned. If the problem goes away, you know it is in the rear section OR it is the multifunction switch inside the column. I just went through the same thing, and after replacing the switches, sockets, grounds, it turnes out someone put in an 1156 bulb into an 1157 socket in the rear tailights, and it shorts out and causes strange things to happen.
