Maveric
Hey I'm one of the new guys, I've read most of the posts here, all of them seem to have helped me in one way or another, but now I have a problem, I was taking out my gauge cluster, and the cable that hooks up to the speedometer either disconnected or broke, I know they're all different (yard experience) mine looks like a toilet snake, and it slid out of its rubber tube housing when i pulled on the cluster, and i know i didn't pull THAT hard, so where does it connect to? how do i get it back on? do i need another one? I reconnected everything (new gauge cluster didn't fit my speedometer) and I can't see how fast I'm going, all the other clusters work, albeit that doesn't help much. If someone else posted information on this, I couldn't find it. only other detail I can think of its an '88 Comanche Pioneer 4.0, 5 speed stick, if that helps. oh and I HATE the big dummy gas gauge  which is why I'm doing this in the first place. JeepcoMJ
you swapped in full gauges i presume? first off, i'd like to say if you did so, but didn't swap the temp. and oil pressure sending unites, those respective gauges are most likely off. second, did the "snake thing" look like a spring with a little square piece on the end? that would be the actual cable...it goes inside the rubber housing thing and runs all the way down to the rear left side of the transmission. make sure you put that cable back where it belongs, then go underneath and unplug it from the tranny...to do that you need a 10 mm. ratchet, then you just unbolt the retainer clip from where the cable goes into the tranny, and pull the cable out. there's a plastic gear on the end just make sure that when you move it it works. check how the teeth look... what you're experiencing is either a broken speedo cable, bad teeth on the speedo gear, or the speedo gear isn't seated onto the south end of the cable. haha, or your speedometer is bad. Maveric
well it worked before i pulled on the cluster so it isn't the speedometer, and no i couldn't swap clusters, i tried to but my speedometer guage didn't fit in the cluster i was going to put in, so i put the old one back, i just hope i didn't break it the cable. ill see if i can plug it back in the transmission, hopefully that isn't too hard. if its broke, looks like more time at the yard. well hopefully its just disconnected, anyway thanks for the help. Pete M
I've always thought speedometers are overrated. :D I use the tach in my 88 to judge speeds. By the way, you can get a shop to adjust the odometer in the new cluster if that's what you're worried about. Legal and everything.
jeepthing07
I did the same thing on my 89 and thought i broke it but after messing with it I slid it back into place and it worked fine and wasent broken afterall. Why wouldent the cluster work? I thought they were all basicly the same. I swaped in a gauge cluster for my idiot light cluster from the same year Cherokee and it had about a 1 foot long extension cable on the back and my comanche dident. Pete M
I believe that extension cable would be for cruise control.
JeepcoMJ
it IS for cruise control. and there are 2 different types of cable-driven cluster housings...the speedometers in them have different carriages and thus different brackets. just make sure you get the one that looks the same on the back, and you can swap anything you want in any way you want! Maveric
Ah, I'm a happy Jeeper again, it was just a loose cable, I shoved it back into the rubber hose and spun it for awhile, then it locked back into the transmission. Everything works now, sept I'm still using my old gauge system with the big dummy fuel gauge *sigh* well tomorrow is another day and possibly then I can reassemble the other cluster, roll up the mileage on it as it wasn't too far off, and replace the trip thing cause its broke. anyway, thanks for the input. Jeep on!
